Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in Peri-Operative Medicine
We are currently seeking a Consultant in Anaesthetics with an interest in Peri-operative Medicine. The post is permanent and is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead. All posts are offered on a whole time or part time basis. In addition to elective theatre lists, the successful candidate will join a 1 in 10 on-call rota, providing cover for general emergencies and obstetrics after hours and over weekends.
The post holder will work flexibly with their Consultant colleagues within the wide remit of the Department’s activity. A formal job plan will be agreed on appointment.
The Department consists of 25 consultants, 4 speciality doctors, 1 clinical fellow and trainees from the Northern Deanery. It covers 12 theatres, obstetrics and ECT. It also provides support for remote specialties. An emergency theatre is staffed and available 24/7. Theatre workload is currently circa 12000 cases per annum.
The Trust has a well-established Pre-assessment Department, staffed by experienced pre-assessment nurses with Health Care assistant and administrative support. It is located in purpose built premises at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Nursing staff see approximately 1,000 patients per month. An online proforma completed. High risk patients are referred on to Consultant delivered clinics; consisting of three High Risk Clinics, two CPEX clinics and one combined ERP/CPEX clinic per week. There is an established Anaemia Clinic.
These clinics are delivered by six Consultant Anaesthetists with an interest in perioperative medicine and CPEX. Following a recent service review we are introducing a new nurse led service based in outpatients. This will identify high risk patients earlier in their surgical pathway allowing prehabilitation. Consultants have access to a computer. Patient letters are dictated during the clinic, and there is dedicated secretarial support for timely typing of patient letters.
Pre-assessment forms part of an advanced peri-operative module offered to trainees.
The Department provides a 24/7 epidural service for obstetrics, the maternity unit has approximately 1,700 deliveries per year. There is also an Acute and Chronic Pain Management service, including outpatient and interventional sessions.
There is a 12-bedded adult critical care unit, accepting approximately 1,000 admissions per year.
There are 6 level 3 and 6 level 2 commissioned beds. It provides comprehensive care of the critically ill patient. This includes renal support and continuous cardiac output monitoring.
Medical Practitioners should be fully registered with the General Medical Council and have a Certificate of Completion of Specialist training or be within 6 months of obtaining a Certificate of Completion of Specialist training at the time of interview.
