Fixed Term – 2 years from start date

This post will be based primarily at Salford Royal NHS Trust as part of the Manchester Academic Health Sciences Centre and is suitable for early career trainees in general surgery wishing to undertake a period of research. Some research activity associated with this appointment will also occur in the academic department of surgery at Imperial College London and at NHS England, where the post will be linked to The Cross System National Sepsis Board.

An appropriate training programme will be devised dependent on your clinical interest; it is anticipated that you will apply for a higher degree awarded by The University of Manchester.

This full-time post involves undertaking a series of interconnected studies, relating to the effect of the timing of source control and outcome in patients with various forms of sepsis. These will include systematic reviews, analyses of data from national and international databases, and potentially, involvement in a prospective trial of early warning monitoring in patients at high risk of sepsis. Training in the required research methodologies and academic supervision will be provided by Professors Gordon Carlson and Professor the Lord Ara Darzi. Analytic support will be provided by NHS England where appropriate.

You will be required to participate in the Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust on call rota for general surgery at CST (SHO) level 1:8 weekday and 1:4 weekend days/nights.
