Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Cleft Surgeon within the West Midlands Regional Cleft Lip and Palate Service. This is a new post in Cleft Surgery arising as a result of relocation of one of the surgical staff of the West Midlands Regional Cleft Service.

The appointee will be one of four surgeons undertaking primary and ‘soft tissue’ secondary cleft surgery for both children and adults. The appointee will also have a commitment to more general practice appropriate to his/her specialist registration.

The Cleft Service in the West Midlands has been a Regional Service since April 2000 and is centred at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. The successful applicant will join a highly committed and enthusiastic team where continued development and improvement of the service is paramount.

This post holds excellent opportunities for further development of planned, coordinated and audited long term care of children with clefts of the lip and/or palate through to adulthood. The large workload and broad based workforce also provide superb research opportunities.

Training and experience in Cleft Surgery are essential, as is a wide experience and broad based training in your ‘home’ specialty (e.g. Plastic Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, ENT Surgery, Paediatric Surgery).

Appropriate experience in treating children and adults of all ages is required, as are good communication skills in the care of children and their families, and excellence in team working.

Informal enquiries are welcome and should be made to: Ian Sharp, Clinical Director, tel. 0121 371 5026, email – ian.sharp@nhs.net
