An opportunity has arisen for two replacement Consultant posts in the urology directorate at City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.
Post 1 - A full time (10 PA), permanent job based at City Hospitals Sunderland. The emphasis of the post is to provide a Specialist Functional Urology service within the Sunderland hub and the spoke sites of Durham..
Post 2 - A locum Consultant Urological Surgeon to fit in with the ongoing needs of the department, tenured for 6 months with a possibility for extension beyond this.
Both posts will work closely with the other 15 Consultant Urological Surgeons who work across the directorate to provide outpatients, diagnostics, day case and inpatient surgery. They will be expected to take part in local and national audits of surgical outcomes and will be expected to recruit to national trials and publish outcomes. They will participate in a 1:11 on-call rota for Urological Emergencies. They will support teaching and training within the Directorate, encourage innovation and the development of team based practice.
The Urology department at Sunderland has a 24 bed ward and also operates from the surgical daycase unit. There are two dedicated Urology theatres and other theatres available within the trust. The department has a bespoke unit for outpatients, flexible cystoscopy, urodynamics, transrectal ultrasound and lithotripsy. The department is dynamic and have recently led new services including a rapid access unit, one stop clinics and new surgical procedures. The Trust has additionally just opened a new Unit in Durham for outpatient and day case Urology services where the post holders would spend some time working.
The Trust continues to be one of the top performing hospitals in the country compared to its peers and is fully registered with the Care Quality Commission obtaining a “Good” rating in 2015. The Trust has around 894 acute beds and an income of around £306.02 million. The total consultant establishment is of around 235, excluding visiting consultants. The Trust has been awarded the status of University Hospital by Newcastle upon Tyne Medical School and is a designated 'base unit' for the clinical curriculum as part of the University's Regional Medical School concept.Hospital activity extends beyond the Sunderland boundary and includes parts of neighbouring districts, serving a local community of around 350,000 along with an increasing range for more specialised services provided to patients outside this area including Urology to a population of 860,000. The Trust also provides an outreach service to our Durham and South Tyneside patients for nephrology, urology, ENT, OMFS and ophthalmology. There is an onsite Health and Fitness Centre and access to a Childcare Coordinator to help staff with their childcare arrangements.
