Applications are invited for the part-time post of Consultant in Adult Emergency Medicine, working 8 sessions per week based at University Hospital of Wales (UHW), Cardiff.

The Emergency Unit at UHW provides comprehensive emergency medicine services for patients from across Cardiff and Vale including children.  Since the recent agreement to establish a South Wales Major Trauma Network, the Emergency Unit is set to become the first Welsh Major Trauma Centre. UHW is already the regional centre for many specialist services including neurosurgery, paediatric critical care, and paediatric surgery.

The Emergency Medicine team at UHW is progressive and active in quality improvement, innovation, research and medical education.  The department sees 140,000 patients per annum of which 35,000 are paediatric.  There is a 7-bedded resuscitation room, 16 beds in the majors area, an ambulatory area with a high turnover of patients and a Minor Injuries Unit which is run by Emergency Nurse Practitioners.  Children presenting with illness or injury are cared for in the Paediatric Emergency Department which is on the same footprint as the Emergency Unit but separated with its own waiting and triage area and treatment rooms.  The Paediatric Emergency Medicine team work closely and collaboratively with the Child Health Directorate.

The Emergency Unit has close links with Cardiff University and actively supports undergraduate education.  There is an active research programme supported by Professor Rainer.  The senior team are committed to training the next generation of Emergency Physicians and it is anticipated that the appointee will play an active role as an educator and trainer.

Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.
