University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust are looking to recruit 2 consultant haematologists to join our young, dynamic and friendly team providing Haematology services in this busy Teaching Hospital.

Successful applicants would complete our expanding team of seven Consultants in Haematology. Interests in malignant haematology and thrombosis / haemostasis are preferable as these would complement the expertise within the department however clinicians with interest in other specialist areas would be encouraged to apply also.

Coventry is the UK City of Culture for 2021. It is situated in the heart of the UK, surrounded by beautiful countryside and has excellent transport links nationally and internationally (one hour to central London by train and 30 minutes to Birmingham Airport). The city has benefitted from increasing investment over the last decade making it an attractive place to live and work. Coventry hospital is also conveniently located near historic towns such as Warwick, Rugby, Kenilworth and Stratford all of which include highly rated schools.

UHCW is the main teaching hospital for Warwick Medical School. In 2006we moved into the 1,300 bedded University Hospital, which is a Major Trauma Centre and Cancer Centre with an advanced automated blood sciences laboratory and well developed research facilities. There are strong links between the Trust and Warwick and Coventry Universities and collaborative work is encouraged.

The dedicated Haematology unit in Coventry has 17 beds (nine side rooms) as well as adjacent outpatient clinic, day unit, Haemophilia unit and office facilities. Haematology services across Coventry and Warwickshire were fully integrated in January 2009, with centralisation of inpatient care (Level 2b and 3) in this unit. We also offer clinic and day case care at the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby.

The appointees will join 12 other Consultants in providing a general Haematology service to Coventry and Warwickshire, with joint on call. Pathology services are also integrated as a countywide network service with reorganisation ongoing and specialist diagnostics being centralised on the UHC site. Within UHCW each post offers a significant degree of subspecialisation. The clinical team includes 1 Associate Specialist, 3 specialist trainees, 1 specialty doctor, a clinical psychologist and 9specialist nurses including nurses with interests in haemostasis, thrombosis, haemoglobinopathies, lymphoma and myeloma.

The post holders will work collaboratively with colleagues with the relevant interests to develop services in their areas of expertise and contribute to leadership of quality and governance agendas in these areas, including participating in the relevant MDMs. The post holders will also contribute to the general haematology workload, including clinic and inpatient work and general and attending on call responsibilities and would have the opportunity to develop interests in these areas.

The successful applicants will have wide experience of clinical and laboratory haematology and will also have, or be willing to develop, the appropriate subspecialist interests. Applicants must have full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice (or be eligible for registration within 6 months of interview), hold MRCP and FRCPath or equivalents and be on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of attaining their CCT at the time of the interview.
