Care of the Elderly Medicine Consultant Physician
An excellent career opportunity is available to join a dynamic, progressive, friendly and supportive team of consultants in managing the care of frail elderly patients.
In developing our departmental five-year vision, we have secured funding for another consultant post, predominantly based at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. This post offers the opportunity to join our successfully established and growing Older Persons’ Assessment and Liaison (OPAL) Service, in parallel with general Care of the Elderly in-patient ward work and also includes opportunities to pursue and develop individual subspecialty interests.
The OPAL Service is growing in strength and staffing since conception earlier in 2015, increasing the services we offer in managing the acute frail elderly. Positive working relationships with the Emergency Department and our Acute Medicine colleagues are enhancing changes in culture and developing better working practices, supported by a multidisciplinary Integrated Assessment Team based at the front door. There are imminent plans to open a dedicated short stay frailty unit at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.
The foundation behind future departmental plans is a cohesive, well-staffed and fully integrated Care of the Elderly department, which currently consists of 5 permanent consultants at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and 3 at Cheltenham General Hospital. Our ambition is to expand our team over the next five years to further develop the OPAL service as well as developing a new peri-operative surgical liaison service, and continuing to expand services in: Orthogeriatrics, Movement disorders, Dementia care and Falls.
We have also recently appointed two dedicated Community Geriatricians with a future strategy to further develop this service to cover all community localities in Gloucestershire.
Our department is committed to teaching and training. Candidates applying for this post will have the opportunity to develop existing skills and contribute to the knowledge pool by teaching undergraduates, post-graduate doctors and supporting other clinical and non-clinical team members.
Quality is paramount and our vision is long-term, so the right job role can be tailored to the strengths of the individual if successful at interview.
This post has widespread support from NHS Gloucestershire and Gloucestershire Care Services as well as Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust was formed in April 2002 and became a second wave Foundation Trust in July 2004. It includes Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital. Gloucestershire is well known for its natural beauty, cultural and leisure activities. The county has many excellent state and private schools as well as colleges of higher education and its own university. There are good rail and road access to Bristol, Birmingham, South Wales and London.
Whole-time, part-time or job share applicants are very welcome. Relocation expenses, flexible working arrangements and support with childcare are available.
