Due to expansion within the Ophthalmology department, Taunton and Somerset Foundation Trust is inviting applications for a full time, substantive Consultant specialising in Medical Retina.

The appointee will lead on diabetic retinopathy screening, and apply to take over as Clinical Director of the Somerset Diabetic Eye Screening Program (SDESP). SDESP is the responsibility of Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. 1.5 PAs is allocated for directorship and day to day referral outcome grading (ROG) and digital surveillance (DS) grading.

The successful candidate will be joining an NHS trust that is one of only 12 Global Digital Exemplars in the country - that is also implementing the Medisight EPR - and recently received a ‘Good’ rating from the CQC.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant consultant team that has recently expanded with the successful recruitment of 5 new high-calibre colleagues over the last 2 years. There are currently 10 consultants (including 3 Retinal), 3 associate specialists, 5 specialty registrars and a nurse consultant.

Consistent with national trends in the specialty, the department is re-configuring to meet future demand, this includes:

  • Intravitreal injections provided by our team of nurse practitioners,
  • Virtual clinics being expanded to include selected new referrals,
  • Macular treatment patients and suitable medical retina follow ups.
  • A recently acquired wide-field imaging and OCT-A, and an upgrading of the OCT provision.
  • A 570nm, pattern and micro-pulse laser system.

The successful applicant will be expected to help provide and develop the medical retinal service with the existing consultants. A general ophthalmology commitment is anticipated. Previous experience of one year in an appropriate fellowship training position is expected. The appointee will be encouraged to take a full part in postgraduate education, and help to develop innovative ways of delivering healthcare.

Applicants will have completed CCT or equivalent (CESR) and must be on the Specialist Register.
