An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Chair in Anaesthesia within the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition and the Clinical Department of Anaesthesia. Consideration will be given to appointing at Senior Clinical Lecturer or Reader level for the appropriate candidate.

The University of Aberdeen and NHS Grampian have identified as a priority the appointment of a senior academic in Anaesthesia who can strengthen capacity and provide academic leadership for a clinical department with research ambitions and attracting talented staff, students and trainees.

We are looking for broad spectrum expertise pertaining to an anaesthetist with a general clinical interest and research strengths in areas of strength in Aberdeen, for example, perioperative medicine, health services research, improving outcomes after surgery. This type of research is ideally located at the University of Aberdeen with its Chief Scientist Office funded Health Services Research Unit, that includes the Centre for Healthcare Randomised Trials (CHaRT),Institute of Medical Sciences and a newly established Centre for Data Health Science.  In addition, there is strong and easily accessed support for data linkage using e-health data, statistical analysis and survey methodology. 

The principal objective for this senior appointment is to establish a research team, make internal and external collaborations and provide clinical research leadership from a clinical base in Anaesthesia with a particular focus on one of the areas in which the School and the Clinical Department has proven strengths.  The successful applicant will be expected to have an international profile in Anaesthesia research and a clinical programme of expertise in one of the above defined areas. S/he will have already a track record in obtaining research funding from charities, research councils or pharma industry or delivering clinical trials or a translational programme as well as high impact publications. Full GMC registration and a Higher Degree, PhD or equivalent is essential.

The successful applicant will be expected to provide the highest standards of research and academic leadership and should therefore already have an internationally recognised record in independent research as well as relevant clinical qualifications and experience. A contribution to the teaching portfolio associated with Anaesthesia is required demonstrating excellence in education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The appointment will carry honorary consultant status, with appropriate clinical duties undertaken at NHS Grampian.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the salary scale for Staff holding Honorary Consultant Contracts (£78,304 - £105,570 per annum) with placement according to qualifications and experience.
