Tees, Esk & Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, a multi-award winning Trust and voted one of the top 10 best places to work in the NHS, is a well managed and financially stable foundation trust with an excellent track record of providing high quality mental health and learning disability services to 2 million people living in County Durham, the Tees Valley, North Yorkshire and York and Selby.

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced consultant psychiatrist to become the Deputy Medical Director in Durham & Darlington locality, one of five roles working at this level within the organisation. There are a number of consultant vacancies across our Adult, Older People, Children and Young People and Learning Disability services and applicants with experience in any of these specialties are welcome to apply.  The substantive clinical base of the successful candidate will depend upon their specialty and vacant posts at the time of interview.

It is expected that the post holder will devote approximately 2 PAs to the Deputy Medical Director role and this will be in recognition of the extra responsibilities and demands of the post. The weekly job plan for the successful candidate will be discussed on an individual basis and can be adapted flexibly.

The Deputy Medical Director will work jointly with the Director of Operations for the locality.  They will be operationally accountable to the Chief Operating Officer and the Medical Director, and professionally accountable to the Medical Director for matters relating to medical staff.

The postholder will have a good overview of medical workforce plans across the locality, and will help recruit and retain members of medical staff to ensure that their skills and talents are deployed across the locality in such a way as to obtain the best possible medical service.  They will provide overall clinical leadership across the locality in developing and maintaining excellent working relationships internally within the Trust and externally with the local commissioning organisations.

The Deputy Medical Director role will be effective for an initial 1 year term, extended to a further 4 years following a satisfactory probation review. The clinical role would be a substantive appointment. Following the five year term, the post would be advertised again, with the expectation that the incumbent postholder would apply for a further term.
