Applications are invited for an inspirational Consultant Otolaryngologist at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. The successful Otorhinolaryngologist will need expertise in the subspecialty of Rhinology. The successful candidate will join the expertise of four other Consultants and will cover City Hospital, Birmingham and Sandwell Hospital, West Bromwich, with an on-call commitment for Otorhinolaryngology of 1 in 5.

The Birmingham Treatment Centre is an ambulatory care unit which is based at City Hospital. Most of the Otorhinolaryngology operating lists and all the outpatient clinics are accommodated in this facility. Currently both City as well as Sandwell Hospital has each got an Emergency Acute Unit. This shall change to single site acute unit as mentioned below, with the opening of the new hospital. There are excellent working relationships with Consultant colleagues from all specialities.

The Trust is one of the largest teaching Trusts in the United Kingdom with a reputation for excellent, friendly staff who provide high quality care from City Hospital in Birmingham and Sandwell General in West Bromwich. Both are busy acute hospitals providing many specialist services and a broad range of emergency services, including Accident & Emergency at both sites. The Trust has circa 900 beds and serves a population of over 500,000. The Trust is a key partner along with the local Clinical Commissioning Group, PCTs and local authorities in the “Right Care Right Here” programme which seeks to deliver an ambitious redevelopment of local health services. Following a very successful public consultation, implementation of the programme is underway with a wide range of secondary care services now being provided via new models of care in community locations. As part of this programme, and part of our 2020 vision, we will open our eagerly awaited Midland Metropolitan Hospital, putting us firmly on the map as one of the nation’s leading provider of integrated care. It will bring all of our acute services onto one site, promoting better patient safety and patient experience.

There is a full postgraduate programme supported by modern Medical Education Centres and clinical library with good IT links. The Trust has an international reputation for teaching and research and the appointee will be expected to contribute to the teaching of medical students and junior doctors.  There are close links with the University of Birmingham and the successful applicant may be granted honorary senior lecturer status within the University.

The area boasts affordable housing with popular residential districts such as Harborne and Sutton Coldfield and easy commute to either of the main hospital sites. There are a number of renowned schools and colleges locally (including a number of independent and grammar schools such as the King Edwards Schools). Birmingham is a very green city with more than 8,000 acres of green space including impressive parks around the city. Due to our central location and good motorway connections we are in easy reach of a number of beautiful rural locations including the Peak District, Cannock Chase, the Lickey Hills and the Cotswolds. The Trust offers a competitive relocation package.

Applicants must be on the GMC’s Specialist Register or be within six months of obtaining their CCT at the time of interview. The appointee is required to have wide training and experience in Otolaryngology and Head and Neck surgery.

Informal enquiries and visits to the Trust are welcomed. Please contact Mr. Uday Kale, Clinical Director for Specialist Surgery/Consultant ENT Surgeon on Tel 0121 507 5137 or Mrs. Anita Sonsale, Clinical Lead for ENT/Consultant ENT Surgeon on Tel 0121 507 5110.
