Consultant Physician in Gastroenterology and General Medicine
Base: Withybush General Hospital, Haverfordwest
We are looking to recruit a motivated Consultant Physician in Gastroenterology and General Medicine, to join our dynamic GI team in Pembrokeshire, based at Withybush General Hospital, Haverfordwest.
This is a replacement post and you will join a colleague in Pembrokeshire (9 posts Health Board wide in total) in a very dynamic and forward looking Gastroenterology Service across the Health Board.
Office accommodation, secretarial support and full IT facilities including access to intranet and internet will be provided.
This post comes during a period of Health Board-wide service reviews, including a comprehensive reconfiguration of services for the General Medicine and Gastroenterology in West Wales. The aim is to provide a spectrum of flexible and responsive services for the General Medicine and Gastroenterology across the Health Board, encompassing:
Development of a comprehensive General Medicine and Gastroenterology service across the Health Board based at Withybush General Hospital.
Development and delivery of a comprehensive 7 day service
Acute inpatient assessment and treatment
General and Specialist DGH and Community-based outpatient clinics
Effective leadership to multidisciplinary staff members of the unit
Development of teaching, training and research within the Organisation
The potential for Health Board-wide developments and a closer liaison with primary care and social services is substantial and exciting. A major expansion in undergraduate medical student teaching is planned. The Gastroenterology team contributes to the acute medical on-call and GI bleed rota in Carmarthenshire. The post holder will be encouraged to develop their own subspecialty interest.
Hywel Dda University Health Board is one of seven acute Health Boards in Wales serving a population of circa 389,000 with over 9,500 staff. It is an integrated health body, ensuring the delivery of high quality primary, community, mental health and secondary care services, and it is responsible for the health and wellbeing of people across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire. It also provides a range of services for people living in south Gwynedd and Powys. Integrated health boards are a key first step in creating a world class NHS in Wales. Primary care and community services are delivered through: 55 GP practices, 51 dental practices, 100 community pharmacies, 52 optometry premises, 8 community hospitals, 11 health centres.
Our in-hospital services are currently delivered through four Hospitals: Bronglais (Aberystwyth), Glangwili (Carmarthen), Prince Philip (Llanelli) and Withybush (Haverfordwest).

Withybush General Hospital is a modern district general hospital (opened in 1979) of approximately 241 beds situated 1 mile from the centre of Haverfordwest the County town of Pembrokeshire. The hospital serves a local population of approximately 120,000 which rises significantly at holiday periods and particularly during the summer.
The hospital provides a broad range of services in General Medicine (including Rheumatology and Palliative Care), General Surgery (with a special interest in Colorectal Surgery), Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics and Trauma & Orthopaedics. The Anaesthetic and Critical Care Team interface with all specialties and provide a state of the art ITU service.
West Wales, and Pembrokeshire in particular, is an area of outstanding natural beauty and is a quiet, safe and picturesque countryside, close to the coast. Its hills, valleys, rivers and stunning coastal path are attractive sites for hill walkers, hikers and horse-riders and it is excellent for fishing, sailing, surfing and cycling pursuits. The area provides a good family lifestyle with some excellent primary and secondary schools offering a wide range of after school activities. There are also excellent road and rail connections to Swansea, Cardiff and London.

With effect from 1st April 2017 points 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 on AfC Pay Band 1 and Pay Band 2 will be adjusted to £16,523 to reflect the incorporation of the living wage £8.45 per hour.
