We are looking for two enthusiastic and motivated Consultant Gastroenterologists to support and expand the high quality services our Trust already offers

We are looking for two enthusiastic and motivated Consultant Gastroenterologists to support and expand the high quality services our Trust already offers. The successful candidates will complement the expertise of the seven other existing consultants in our large teaching trust, providing Gastroenterology, hepatology and endoscopy to a culturally diverse population.

These posts are part of our expansion to meet increased demand. As part of this expansion we would like to develop subspecialisation in the department.. Posts B & C are general posts; IBD, endoscopy and nutrition are all subspecialty areas we would like to develop further, but applicants with other subspecialty interests are encouraged to apply.

Both posts are based at City Hospital, Birmingham and Sandwell General Hospital and cover the area local to Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust.

The Trust is a large teaching Trust with a reputation for excellent, friendly staff who provide high quality care from City Hospital in Birmingham and Sandwell General in West Bromwich. Both are busy acute hospitals providing many specialist services and a broad range of emergency services, including Accident & Emergency at both sites. The Trust serves a population of over 500,000. The Trust is a key partner along with the local Clinical Commissioning Group, PCTs and local authorities in the “Right Care Right Here” programme which seeks to deliver an ambitious redevelopment of local health services. Following a very successful public consultation, implementation of the programme is underway with a wide range of secondary care services now being provided via new models of care in community locations.

As part of this programme we will open our eagerly awaited Midland Metropolitan Hospital, putting us firmly on the map as one of the nation’s leading provider of integrated care. It will bring all of our acute services onto one site, promoting better patient safety and patient experience. Our 2020 vision plans for admitting specialty consultants working across the 7 days by redistributing our 5 day work. Teams are supporting cross site working over the two existing acute sites as we prepare teams for our future models of care. This also provides excellent training and team development opportunities.

Applicants must possess recognised training and broad experience in Gastroenterology and General (Internal) Medicine and full registration with the GMC. Applicants must be on the GMC’s Specialist Register, or be within 6 months of achieving CCT in Gastroenterology and General (Internal) Medicine.

The Gastroenterology service is supported by comprehensive endoscopy, GI physiology, pathology and imaging services. Bowel Cancer Screening and Bowel Scope Screening lists are carried out at both sites.

The successful appointees will also be expected to participate in the on-call rota for endoscopy.

The Trust has a very good reputation for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching with strong links to the University of Birmingham and Health Education West Midlands. Many of the department are actively involved in clinical trials and a research interest would be strongly supported for a suitably qualified applicant.

The area boasts affordable housing with popular residential districts such as Harborne and Sutton Coldfield an easy commute to either of the main hospital sites. There are a number of very good schools and colleges locally (including a number of independent and grammar schools such as the King Edwards Schools). Birmingham is a very green city with more than 8,000 acres of green space including impressive parks around the city. Due to our central location and good motorway connections we are in easy reach of a number of beautiful rural locations including the Peak District, Cannock Chase, the Lickey Hills and the Cotswolds. The Trust offers a competitive relocation package.

For an informal discussion please contact Dr Edward Fogden, consultant gastroenterologist and clinical lead for gastroenterology & Dr Mark Anderson, consultant gastroenterologist and clinical lead for endoscopy on telephone 0121 507 6134.
