Two Medical Oncology Clinical Fellows
The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is one of the leading cancer centres in the world and has an international reputation for the care and treatment it provides. The associated Institute of Cancer Research has a similar reputation for research and development. The partnership between the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Institute of Cancer Research constitutes a centre of excellence for research and development, education, treatment and care in cancer. Together they are acknowledged to be one of the largest comprehensive cancer centres in the world. The Royal Marsden serves a local, regional, national and international population from two hospital sites, Chelsea and Sutton.
We are looking to appoint two enthusiastic and forward thinking doctors to the post of Medical Oncology Clinical Fellow in Gastrointestinal Cancers or Sarcoma/Lymphoma respectively to start September 2018 for a duration of 12 months. The posts have been designed to develop the post-holder’s experience in the clinical management of the patients treated within these units and to understand the future treatment landscape, to develop prescribing skills for anti-cancer systemic therapy (and if the post-holder does not have chemotherapy competency this will be developed under supervision of the team), to develop knowledge of novel therapeutics administered within clinical trials, to become
proficient in the management of patients within clinical trials and to understand the governance framework around clinical trials. A day has been identified within the job plan for the postholder to undertake clinical research, audit/quality improvement/leadership activities and teaching to support their own professional development and for CV building.
The post holder will be based in either the Gastrointestinal
or Sarcoma/Lymphoma team in Chelsea at the Royal Marsden. Each unit has an extensive program of research, teaching, academic and quality improvement activities including regular research meetings. Each unit also runs an extensive clinical and translational research programme and the post holder will be expected to contribute to these activities with the support of a large multi-disciplinary team and research teams. They will be working alongside Medical oncology specialist trainees on the Royal Marsden Medical Oncology training programme and with other clinical research fellows which provides an excellent peer
In order to fulfi ll the responsibilities of the post the appointee
should have some oncology experience and preferably will have MRCP or equivalent. The post would be particularly suitable for doctors who have completed Core Medical competencies (or equivalent), and wish to gain a period of focused experience and training before ST3 application. The posts are also suitable for post-CCT level doctors wishing to gain further experience in the Centre in either of these two areas and in clinical research prior to taking up a consultant post.
