Consultant Psychiatrist in Old Age Psychiatry

We are a financially stable progressive mental health and community services trust with very strong clinical leadership at all levels of the organisation.

The trust has a focus on improving the experience of patients, carers and our staff. For the last four years we have been developing a special quality improvement programme that provides our clinical staff, patients and carers with skills to transform our services. We believe that our staff are the organisation’s greatest asset and are the best agents for change.

In 2015 the Trust became responsible for mental health services in Luton and Bedfordshire. In 2016 it was graded as Outstanding by the CQC, as Provider of the Year by the Health Service Journal, as well as being rated the best place to work in Mental Health.

Newham hosts a WHO Collaborating Centre (the only one specifically for Mental Health Service Development in the world) and the successful applicant will have opportunities for academic links with the Centre and its large research group in social psychiatry. You will also be enrolled on the Trusts highly regarded Improvement Science in Action training and will be encouraged to contribute to our unique Quality Improvement programme.

Newham is seeking a consultant psychiatrist to join the Newham Mental Health Care of Older People service. This vacancy has arisen as the result of the current post holder’s retirement. The service covers the borough of Newham, co-terminus with the London Borough of Newham; the patch is divided between two substantive consultant psychiatrists.

The role comprises consultant cover to the CMHT for older people covering both functional and organic cases in addition to input to Newham Memory Clinic. There is a need for close and collaborative working relationships with the East London inpatient MHCOP consultants who are based in Tower Hamlets and have responsibility for managing Newham older adults requiring inpatient care. The CMHT for older adults including medical staff are pivotal for the smooth access to and exit from inpatient mental healthcare where needed.

For informal discussion and queries please contact Dr Dominic Dougall, Clinical Director by either email: or by telephone: 020 7540 6767.

Closing date: 3 June 2018. Interview date: 20 June 2018.
