Consultant in Gastrointestinal Surgery-interest in Upper GI Surgery
Exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Acute Surgical team at Royal Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust. We are developing our services and are seeking to appoint motivated and committed individual to this new post increasing the consultant group in gastrointestinal surgery from 12 to 14 consultants. All 14 consultants will deliver acute surgical services for Cornwall and will participate equally in a 1 in 14 on call system.
The upper gastrointestinal surgery unit (5 Consultants) performs all aspects of benign upper GI surgery. Laparoscopic anti-reflux and complex hiatal surgery is supported by a surgeon-led oesophageal physiology service.
Biliary surgery includes laparoscopic ultrasound, bile duct exploration and a ‘hot’ biliary service in support of the acute take. In line with national guidance gallstone pancreatitis and cholecystitis receive their definitive treatment during their index admission.
The successful applicant would be expected to offer all areas of benign upper GI surgery excluding bariatric surgery, which is currently delivered by 3 Consultants with no plans to expand this further. General Paediatric surgery experience is also encouraged.
The specialty manages 350 new cancers a year with nearly 300 operations, all surgeons are members of the colorectal cancer MDT. The successful candidate should bring complementary skills to the department to develop sustainable provision across the areas.
Royal Cornwall Hospital is a busy acute hospital and the surgical service runs a commitment free on call with a second consultant delivering acute operating in the mornings.
This new post will support elective and acute delivery as the trust moves towards 52 week delivery of all services.
The trust owns 3 sites with gastrointestinal surgery and endoscopy taking place in Truro (Treliske) and Penzance (West Cornwall Hospital). The trust has a full vascular service as well as 24/7 interventional radiology; medical gastroenterology provide on call endoscopy service with weekend inpatient endoscopy lists.
As well as adult services the hospital delivers general paediatric surgery and candidates (for either post) who have general paediatric training are encouraged to apply.
This post will be 11 PA job plans that will include 2.5 SPAs for the first year. For new consultants the job plan for this post will include 2.5 SPAs for the first year.
