Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth is seeking one whole time Consultant Histopathologist to join our supportive existing team of 16 consultants. The Cellular Pathology department is situated within the new Pathology Centre at the hospital. This is a replacement post. The department operates partial specialist reporting, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop specialist interests that compliment those already existing within the department. Cytopathology and autopsy responsibilities are also available, but are not essential. New departmental management is in place, and there is vast experience and support at hand.
The Portsmouth Pathology Service is one of the largest district general hospital laboratories in the country. It provides a comprehensive diagnostic service to the Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust (1000 beds) and to the three local clinical care groups. The Trust is in the top 10 of recruiters to clinical trials in the UK.
The Cellular Pathology Laboratory is situated in a state-of-the-art purpose built Pathology Centre on site at the Queen Alexandra Hospital.
The current annual workload is approximately 39,000 histology specimens, 50,000 gynaecological cytology specimens, 2500 non-gynaecological cytology specimens and approximately 1200 post mortem examinations.
The new departmental management team has a keenness to develop the service.
The majority of specimen dissection is performed by biomedical scientists and a clinical scientist, and further to this we support them entering the specialist dissection programme.
We are moving towards a point system for allocation of consultant workload.
You will have your own office.
The laboratory has full CPA accreditation.
To be eligible for the post, you must have General Medical Council (GMC) registration, be on or within 6 months of eligibility to be included on the specialist register of the GMC, and have Fellowship of the Royal College Pathologists or have completed a period of education and training in Histopathology recognised by the GMC.
