The Friarage Hospital - Northallerton
42 hours per week

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Critical Care Medicine in this busy tertiary referral hospital and Major Trauma Centre to join a dynamic and friendly team of 18 ICM consultants within a larger department of 75 anaesthetists. In addition to consultant staff, the ITU has a rota of 10 middle grade medical staff and resident trainees in each of the 3 units. Critical Care at James Cook has 32 beds (16 level 2 in an award winning HDU and 16 level 3) caring for 2600 admissions per year. 

Additionally there are 4 regional spinal injuries beds and separate neurosurgical HDU, Cardiac and PICU beds in the Trust. The Critical Care unit covers a wide breadth of regional referral specialities including vascular, upper GI, Neurosciences, renal support and spinal injuries and is the regional major trauma centre with its own helipad. 

The critical care unit has a very strong research and educational record (FICE training, centre for Advanced Training in Intensive Care Medicine, having 3 Advanced trainees at any one time. There is a highly regarded weekly teaching programme. ICNARC outcomes are excellent. 

On call is within Critical Care which includes 3 consultants at weekend daytimes and 1 in 18 nights. Occasional sessions may be at the Friarage hospital, Northallerton, nestled in the beautiful North Yorkshire moors. A variety of anaesthesia lists would be available tailored to an individual’s anaesthetist interests and the service needs of the department. Expressions of interest would also be welcomed from single CCT ICM applicants as well as joint CCT applicants with other specialities, cardiac ITU, acute or respiratory medicine etc.  

Applicants should possess full GMC registration, FRCA (or equivalent) and either already be on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of receiving their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview. Advanced training in Intensive Care (or equivalent) is essential.  

The successful candidate will be appointed under the new terms and conditions of service for NHS Consultants. Full consideration will be given to applicants who wish to apply for a reduced/part time contract and the post may be appointed as either a substantive or 12 month locum position.
