Director of Public Health
Applications are invited for a Full Time Director of Public Health for Gibraltar to take over from the current post-holder who expects to take retirement in summer 2018. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will be appointed to the post immediately and work in parallel for a few weeks with the incumbent until the latter retires on 30th September, so as to enable the transfer of skills and corporate memory. During the parallel working period, the appointee will carry the title of ‘Designate’.
The Director of Public Health post also includes responsibilities for communicable disease control, health improvement, managing the cancer registry and taking a lead role in professional regulation.
Gibraltar is a British dependency located at the southernmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula, with a population of just over 33,000, augmented by a further 13,500 regular daily workers from Spain and several thousand short-term visitors during the holiday periods. Gibraltar’s health service is independent from the UK-NHS, but is organised and modelled in many ways on it and follows traditions of British medical practice, including professional regulation with UK bodies. The epidemiology is similar to Western European affluent nations and the health services provided are of a high quality.
Gibraltar offers an attractive standard of living with a good work life balance. Apart from year-round pleasant weather, it offers plenty of leisure opportunities, good schools and a family-friendly environment. It is easily reached from London in about 2½ hours’ flying time and has more than 20 flights a week to UK destinations. There is a land border with Spain and Malaga airport is just 1½ hours’ drive away, offering further extensive links to global destinations.
The post will appeal very much to an experienced public health physician who wants to move away from being a small part of a very large system in favour of a “hands-on” post where the population size is manageable, the organisational structures are flat and results of actions are more readily apparent.
Applicants must hold full registration with the UK General Medical Council, with a licence to practise and must be on the Specialist Register for Public Health.
The above appointment is offered on a fixed-term contract of three years with a possibility to extend further. Salary, dependant on experience, ranges from £107,777 to £132,984 per annum.
Passages are payable and transportation of personal effects and accommodation is subsidised.
