Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for this Chair in Primary Care, based in the Centre for Population Health Sciences (CPHS).  CPHS forms part of the Usher Institute of Population Health Sciences and Informatics in the University of Edinburgh’s College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. The appointee will have a key role in further developing academic primary care at the University, and will be expected to build on our research excellence in areas including primary care, public health, clinical trials, health services research, health-related social sciences, health informatics and global health.

Primary care and general practice have a strong presence at Edinburgh, demonstrating excellence in research, teaching and clinical practice. The appointee will play a key role in further developing these strengths across the College and the University – whilst leading on knowledge translation to ensure maximum impact amongst our key stakeholders, including the NHS and patient populations.

Applicants will have an outstanding strong track record of research in primary care and other relevant areas, supported by external grant funding and will develop a world-leading programme of research. Evidence of international excellence in research, academic leadership and strategic planning is essential. Applicants should also have an excellent track record in teaching and learning and a demonstrable commitment to developing and supporting relevant learning and teaching programmes, contributing, for example, to the Undergraduate MBChB Medicine degree, the Masters in Public Health (on campus and distance learning) and the Master of Family Medicine programmes. All applicants will need to demonstrate commitment and capacity for multi-disciplinary working and be willing to engage with the many academic opportunities afforded by the Usher Institute, in areas including health services research, cancer and palliative care, respiratory health, chronic disease management, medical informatics and global health.

Prospective candidates should, in the first instance, contact Professors David Weller, Co-Director, Centre for Population Health Sciences (tel + 44 131 650 9518; email david.weller@ed.ac.uk), Sarah Cunningham-Burley, Dean of Molecular, Genetic and Population Health Sciences (tel +44 131 650 3217; email: Sarah.C.Burley@ed.ac.uk), or Aziz Sheikh, Director of the Usher Institute of Population Health Sciences and Informatics (tel +44 131 650 8102; email aziz.sheikh@ed.ac.uk),

We welcome applications from everyone irrespective of gender or ethnic group. As women and members of ethnic minorities are currently under-represented in posts at this level, we particularly encourage applications from members of these groups.
