This is a replacement post due to retirement and you will join 5 colleagues in a very dynamic and forward looking Otorhinolaryngology department with regional head and neck cancer responsibilities.

Hywel Dda University Health Board is one of seven acute Health Boards in Wales.

The ENT department aims to provide a spectrum of flexible and responsive services for Otorhinolaryngology across the Health Board, encompassing:

A comprehensive Otorhinolaryngology service across the Health Board based at Glangwili General Hospital with services provided at all four main hospitals in the Hywel Dda University Health Board area.

Delivery of a comprehensive 7 day emergency service.

Acute inpatient assessment and treatment.

General and Specialist outpatient clinics

Effective leadership to multidisciplinary staff members of the unit

Development of teaching, training and research within the Organisation.

The potential for Health Board-wide developments and a closer liaison with primary care and social services is substantial and exciting. A major expansion in undergraduate medical student teaching is planned.

This post has become available following retirement of one of the consultants. There are currently 6 consultants with 2 head & neck surgeons. The service is based at Glangwili General Hospital, Carmarthen.

The head & neck cancer services comprise a combined team of 2 Surgeons, 1.6 Clinical nurse specialists, 2 specialist speech and language therapists and a specialist dietician. The team is, enthusiastic and well motivated with good support from the health board and is lead by Mr Vinod Prabhu. The team is an integral part of the West Wales Cancer Network, meeting weekly at the Head and Neck regional MDT held in Morriston Hospital, Swansea. 

Most head and neck cancer surgical work is performed within Hywel Dda University Health Board Patients while advanced resections and flap reconstructions are carried out in Morriston hospital in conjunction with Maxillo-facial and/or plastic surgeons.

The post is offered on the amended terms of the Consultant Contract Wales on an optional whole time 37.5 hour working week – 10 sessions, although any candidate who is unable, for personal reason, to work full time would be eligible to be considered for the post. In this eventuality adjustments to the working pattern will be discussed with consultant colleagues. The post is subject to the terms and conditions of service governing the appointment of hospital medical and dental staff in Wales.

This appointment is Health Board wide, with the principal place of employment being Glangwili General Hospital, Sessions at other working locations including off site working may be necessary and will be agreed as part of the job planning process. This may be subject to change as the Health Board’s clinical requirements dictate to meet the needs of the service/patients.
