Department of Cellular Pathology

Join us at North Bristol NHS Trust where you’ll be part of a sub-specialised team, working in a brand new purpose-built Pathology centre.

Applications are invited for a whole-time Consultant Histopathologist specialising in GI Pathology. This replacement post offers an exceptional opportunity to join a dynamic Cellular Pathology Service and to develop specialist diagnostic and research interests with the enthusiastic support of the corresponding clinical teams. A specialist interest in Endocrine and Head and Neck Pathology is also desirable.

The existing Cellular Pathology service was formed in May 2016 when the North Bristol service and the UHBristol service came together to provide a single service for Bristol. The main service is delivered from new, purpose-built accommodation on the Southmead Hospital site although the department continues to provide an Essential Services Laboratory at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. A new Laboratory Information System, Clinisys WinPath Enterprise, was implemented in October 2016.

We, Severn Pathology, provide several services under one roof. Importantly, the Bristol Genetics Laboratory (BGL), which includes Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics disciplines is co-located with the other pathology disciplines and is the lead provider of laboratory services for the West of England Genomics Medicine Centre. We have invested heavily in this service which delivers a wide range of genetic analysis services to the UK and internationally.

We are based in the North of this buzzing and culturally rich city – if you move here it won’t take you long to discover everything that it has to offer. Bristol City Centre is just 15 minutes away, and has a great array of shops, theatres and restaurants and has an array of annual festivals and events including the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta and the Bristol Harbour Festival. For those who cycle, Bristol boasts excellent cycling facilities and was chosen as England’s first cycling city in 2008 and was voted the European green capital in 2015. In 2017 Bristol was named ‘best place to live in Britain’ by the Times “the city is a worthy winner thanks to its ideal combination of extraordinary culture, impressive schools, buzzing culinary scene, exciting redevelopment and community spirit.”.

As a motivated professional you will have a real passion for what you do and if the idea of working in a truly integrated pathology service centre appeals to you, then apply today.

Individuals wishing to apply must be registered Medical Practitioners (with a licence to practice) and on the Specialist Register of the GMC or be eligible to be on the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Advisory Appointments Committee.  Applicants must also have Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists.

The successful candidate will be employed under Terms & Conditions of Service for Consultants (England) 2003. The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential.

To arrange a visit or for an informal discussion about the role, contact Dr Nidhi Bhatt (clinical lead) at 01174149880 or Dr Newton Wong (GI pathology lead) for subspecialty-specific matters
