Applications are invited for these two full time posts of Consultant Physicians in Diabetes and Endocrinology with General Internal Medicine (10PAs). These new posts have been approved following the expansion of the department and the development of a locality wide Consultant-led Integrated Diabetes Service. In order to deliver this, we are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join a strong, close working team of four full time consultants, two part time and three sessional consultants.

Comprehensive inpatient and outpatient Diabetes and Endocrinology services run across all 3 Trust sites and over the next six months we expect to further develop our current portfolio of subspecialty clinics. Since April 2009 all acute medicine has been centralised at Watford General Hospital and together with consultant colleagues you will also provide cover to inpatients as part of a shared rota with colleagues of 1 month in 7.  You will contribute to providing inpatient consultation to patients admitted to the Acute Admissions Unit (AAU), specialty referrals within the hospital and provide leadership in the Multi-Disciplinary foot team. Post holders will also work collaboratively with Community and Primary care partners in delivering Community diabetes services with the aim of achieving full integration between primary, community and secondary care.

The diabetes team is based in a dedicated diabetes centre at Watford General Hospital. You will be supported by a superb team of eight Diabetes Specialist Nurses and two endocrine specialist nurses across the Trust, with specialist podiatrists and dieticians. The community team comprises a nurse Consultant and an additional seven diabetes specialist nurses and specialist diabetes dieticians.

The post-holder will take part in the acute on call medical rota on an equal basis with other specialty physicians (currently 1 in 17 weekdays and approximately 1 in 20 weekends).

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to participate in an active departmental research programme and will also be encouraged to take a role in medical education.  West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust is a University College London Associated Teaching Hospital and the department has a strong commitment to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

Watford General Hospital is within a 20 minute train journey from Central London with easy access to all the main academic institutions. All main hospital sites have very good rail links and lie close to the M25 and M1 motorways. There are excellent local schools and the surrounding rural area is extremely attractive.

Applicants must hold MRCP (UK) or equivalent and be on the GMC’s Specialist register (or within six months of attaining CCT or equivalent) in G(I)M and Diabetes & Endocrinology at the time of interview. Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to visit the department and should contact Dr TM Galliford, Clinical Specialty Lead Tel: 01923 217696 or Dr AJ Ogilvie, Divisional Director for Medicine, Watford General Hospital, Tel: 01923 217287

Applications with CV to include CCT dates together with the names, addresses and fax numbers of three referees should be sent to the above address.
