Consultant in General and Upper GI Surgery

We seek a Consultant in General Surgery with a special interest in Upper GI surgery to a new substantive post. Experience in both General and Upper GI surgery is essential. The successful candidate will have an interest in laparoscopic surgery and could develop a service for laparo-scopic bile duct exploration. They will be able to provide endoscopic pal-liation of upper gastrointestinal malignancy and, ideally, will have ERCP experience.
The successful applicant will join two other General surgeons with Upper GI sub-specialty interests providing Upper GI cancer management for Ayrshire (base population – 360,000). Presently, this includes endo-scopic/ surgical palliation and resections of oesophageal and gastric cancers. The team also provides laparoscopic and endoscopic man-agement of benign upper GI pathologies for north Ayrshire. There is an established Bariatric service, based in our sister hospital in Ayr.
The post will be based at University Hospital, Crosshouse (539 beds - base population 225,000) that opened in 1982, and has been expanded and upgraded regularly since including recent additions of a Combined Assessment Unit and a Same Day Admissions Unit.
The appointee will replace the senior retiring consultant and join the eight remaining Consultant General Surgeons (two Upper GI, four colorectal and two general/paediatric sub-specialty interests). The post-holder will participate in the emergency on-call rota for general surgery (1 in 9). There are also four consultant breast surgeons within the department.
