Staff specialist appointments are made for one of these sites, however, in exceptional circumstances the staff specialist may be requested to work at other locations or intensive care facilities within SCHN. For this position, initial appointment is to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead (CHW). This unit admits approximately 1300 critically ill children annually. Approximately 35% of admissions are cardiac including a wide range of complex neonatal cardiac surgery and we have a mature ECMO programme. Most sub-specialities are represented including liver transplantation, oncology and bone marrow transplantation and neurosurgery. The hospital is also the state centre for paediatric burns and a major trauma centre for paediatrics. Academically the hospital is affiliated with the University of Sydney.

The staff specialist in paediatric intensive care medicine is focused on ensuring the delivery of excellent clinical care for critically ill children and their families. They are responsible for the function of the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and any close observation or ICU step-down areas managed by intensive care. Duties include direct patient care, patient flow, intensive care governance, education, research and supervision of junior medical staff.

The on-call staff specialist works with medical and nursing staff to provide advice and final decision-making on admission, transfer and discharge of patients as required. On call duties also include oversight of the PICU outreach service, and liaison with NETS, patient flow and SCHN management to inform a patient-centred approach to efficient and safe management of critically ill children within SCHN capacity and resources.

Other activities include participation in quality assurance, quality improvement, teaching and research both within the department as well as the hospital and wider paediatric intensive care community in NSW, Australasia and internationally.
