Consultant Physician in Geriatric and General Medicine with special interest in Stroke

Due to further development of our hyper acute stroke service, we are seeking to recruit two additional consultants specialising in stroke and geriatric medicine.

The successful appointees will join the stroke service which sits within the department of medicine for older people, consisting of 16 consultants providing a range of geriatric medicine subs-pecialisms.

The 32 bed Hyper-acute stroke unit and 25 bed rehabilitation unit at Whiston Hospital provides specialist stroke care by a highly skilled and motivated multidisciplinary team, for stroke patients from the Knowsley, St Helens, Halton and Warrington area, currently seeing approximately 900 confirmed strokes per year. The successful appointee will be part of a happy and friendly team that is forward looking with a lot of support from the executive board for the department.

The stroke service has been consistently one of the highest performing teams in the country on the Stroke Sentinel National Audit for the last 2 years and continues to improve and develop its breadth of service and innovative working practices.

Successful applicants will join the 1:8 hyper-acute stroke unit and stroke thrombolysis rota. This is consultant-delivered, but will benefit from integrated telemedicine support later this year.

The Trust is one of the most sought after teaching venues for students from the University of Liverpool and attracts high quality, enthusiastic trainees. The department has a high profile within the Medical Care Group with a very successful Stroke service, Orthogeriatrics and Frailty service. There are currently 6 consultants with special interest in Stroke participating in a hyper acute service on the Whiston Hospital site.

This is an 11.5 PA job plan; it will be reviewed in line with stroke service reconfiguration.
