2 Consultants in Emergency Medicine

University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) is offering a unique opportunity for 2 highly motivated professionals to join our Trust working in the most modern healthcare facility in the UK.As well as state of the art infrastructure to work within, UHB, which encompasses the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, has achieved designation as a Level 1 Major Trauma Centre for the West Midlands in April 2012.
The emergency department sees over 115,000 new patients per year (4000 paediatric) and is fully supported by all adult specialties. There is a dedicated area for major and minor presentations, resuscitation, and dedicated diagnostics, including a co-located radiology department.
Capacity has recently been expanded with an Emergency Observation Unit and soon to be opened dedicated rapid assessment area with 10 dedicated cubicles.
The emergency department prides itself on being a close knit, friendly and progressive department, which is well resourced offering a high level of training to junior staff.
We are looking to appoint 2 consultants who will join our dedicated and dynamic team of 15 WTE.
This will enable us to deliver increased consultant shop floor presence during hours of greatest need, matching senior staffing to patient demand. It will also enable us to deliver consultant-led rapid assessment.
We are in the process of increasing our EMP workforce and also creating 3 new ACP roles.
Within the 2 posts we are looking for:
- An enthusiastic and senior experienced ED consultant who will lead the team. You must demonstrate strong leadership and communication skills and the charisma and ability to lead a large and diverse group of doctors. Prior experience of medical leadership and ability to work in a busy ED department with a major trauma centre is essential. This will be a 12PA job plan with 4 PAs allocated to the clinical service lead role.
- With the 2nd post we are seeking a dynamic and innovative individual who will help develop pre-hospital emergency medicine service. Applications from individuals who do not have experience in PHEM are also encouraged.
The job plans are annualised which allows significant flexibility. The on-call commitment is 1 in 15.
Applicants should be on the GMC specialist register or be eligible for inclusion on the register within the next six months, have FCEM/FRCEM or equivalent.
