An opportunity has arisen to appoint 2 Consultants in Vascular Surgery. These are permanent posts and will be based at University Hospital Hairmyres.

Post 1 will involve all aspects of routine vascular surgical practice but will also include responsibilities for leading and developing the delivery of vascular access service to NHS Lanarkshire's renal dialysis patients.

Post 2 will involve all aspects of routine vascular surgical and endovascular practice. The NHS Lanarkshire Vascular Surgical Service is based at University Hospital Hairmyres and is a busy unit which provides specialist care in vascular and endovascular surgery.

The successful candidate will join the vascular surgical team comprising 5 consultant vascular Surgeons (this post being one of those), 2 Specialty Grade doctors and normally 1 - 2 senior vascular trainees from the regional training programme to provide Vascular Surgical services to NHS Lanarkshire for both elective and emergency services.

There is a vascular nurse specialist whose roles include assisting with pre-assessment, submission of audit data to the National Vascular Registry and co-ordinating the patient pathway for screen detected aneurysm patients.

There is also a renal access co-ordinator nurse and a stroke liaison nurse who interface between nephrology, stroke and vascular surgical services.

There are close working relations between the departments of anaesthetics, interventional vascular radiology and vascular surgery with a weekly multidisciplinary meeting. Patient care is facilitated by a 28 bed dedicated vascular ward, a 4 bed shared level 1 HDU, and a 10 bed Intensive and adult critical care unit. Within the main theatre complex is a dedicated vascular theatre which is used 9 sessions per week by the vascular team.

There is also a dedicated CPOD emergency theatre that is shared with general surgery. There is a recently upgraded radiological / vascular interventional suite in the theatre complex for endovascular treatments. The vascular radiologists provide an interventional on-call service.

Some renal access theatre sessions are held at University Hospital Monklands. There are vascular out-patient clinics in all three NHS Lanarkshire hospitals with access to portable duplex and doppler ultrasound in the clinics. There is a nurse led community claudication clinic service at multiple locations throughout the county. Acute receiving is undertaken for the whole of the county. Patients requiring in-patient emergency care are generally transferred to the Hairmyres vascular unit unless unstable in which cases the vascular team attends at the respective site.

An approximate indication of unit activity includes just over 4000 out-patient appointments across the service (excluding community claudication clinics), approximately 900 interventional procedures, 50 - 100 EVAR (including FEVAR) procedures, 50 - 100 carotid endarterectomy procedures, including 25 - 50 open aortic reconstructions.

Applications are invited from candidates who are on the GMC's Specialist Register or are within 6 months of CCT or CESR (CP) at interview. Applicants should hold full GMC registration with a license to practice and have an interest in vascular access surgery as well as the generality of vascular surgical practice.
