Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) invites applications for Consultant Radiologists to join our cohesive, energetic and supportive team of 25 Consultant Radiologists, delivering imaging services and interventions to the population of Cornwall. One post is replacement (neuro) and one post is additional(GI) though applicants with any subspecialist interest who are interested in working in Cornwall are encouraged to enquire.

RCHT is a large teaching hospital, serving a population of 420,000. The Clinical Imaging Directorate delivers a 7 day imaging service and 24/7 on-call diagnostic radiology service with a separate 24/7 interventional radiology on call rota.

The Clinical Imaging department was singled out for high praise following the recent CQC inspection;

We work as a team to provide comprehensive imaging services for our patients. Subspecialisation is encouraged but we don’t work in modality ‘silos’ and all contribute to the General Radiology workload.

A unique feature of working in Truro is our daily Radiology review meeting at 9 a.m where all Consultants and trainees attend to view interesting and challenging cases and discuss the day ahead.

There are 12 Specialist Trainees working in Truro from the Peninsula Radiology Academy. They provide seamless 24/7 1st on on-call cover.

We have a stable, highly skilled radiography workforce with in house Radiography training seconded from UWE and Exeter. There are 2 Consultant Radiographers providing Breast and GI radiology services.

Clinical imaging has benefitted from strong, skilled and highly experienced managerial leadership for over 8 years, meeting all of it’s diagnostic and treatment targets and sustaining the rolling capital equipment replacement programme:-

  • 4 Multislice CT Scanners -Most recently Toshiba Aquilon Prime ONE -2016 and GE 128 slice 2018. A replacement Multislice CT scanner is planned adjacent to ED in 2018.
  • 3 1.5T MRI Scanners (Phillips). Most recent 2017. 3 New MRI scanners planned in new scanning facility in 2018/2019
  • Managed service Ultrasound contract- Toshiba providing seamless Machine replacement to keep up with Hardware developments.
  • Bespoke IR unit in theatre environment with dedicated recovery. One Hybrid endovascular theatre and one adjacent Non-vascular room(Siemens Artis Zeego & Zee).
  • State of the art Hybrid isotope imaging with 2 SPECT CT units- Most recent replacement 2018 and onsite PET CT delivered in partnership with Alliance Medical.

Cornwall is a beautiful county which offers an outstanding quality of life and providing many opportunities for outdoor activities. There are world class Sailing waters in Falmouth and world class surfing beaches on both North and South coast. The countryside is beautiful with rugged coastal pathways for walking, and cycling. There is a  thriving arts and theatre scene as well as an interesting variety of eating places, including celebrity-owned restaurants within Cornwall. 

There are daily flights from Newquay to London and Manchester and beyond. The major road route both in and out of the county is the A30 which connects with the M5 motorway at Exeter. There are regular rail services with daily passenger and sleeper services

Applicants are required to be on the GMC Register, or within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / EU equivalent certification training and experience at the time of interview.
