Come and join our successful team, located on the Norfolk coast within walking distance of long sandy beaches and close to the beautiful Norfolk Broads. This is a new post. We are happy to accommodate someone dedicated fulltime to Acute Medicine or someone who seeks a 50/50 or 70/30 split between another Medical Specialty, including but not exclusively Gastroenterology, Respiratory Medicine, Older Peoples Medicine and Cardiology.
The successful candidate would join a team of five enthusiastic acute medical consultants and three associated consultants to further develop and streamline the front-door pathway. We utilise point-of-care ultrasound and enjoy an excellent service from our radiology colleagues to fast-track outpatient management of conditions such as pulmonary embolism.
The Acute Medical Unit is a 34-bedded unit, including 8 level 1+ beds. We manage acute non-invasive ventilation within the unit in the initial 24-48 hours before transferring to the respiratory ward.
Our Ambulatory Care Unit has attracted international attention. Using a combination of point-of-care testing and rapid senior clinical assessment, we have achieved a mean length of stay for the unit of 120 minutes with 96% same-day discharges. The Ambulatory Unit is currently undergoing a state-of-the-art transformation, due for completion June 2018. There will be multiple consultation suites and procedure rooms to enable us to better manage our current patient demand of 25-40 patients per day as well as a future demand of up to 60 patients per day.
Since April 2017, we have incorporated the 16-bedded Short Stay Medical Unit within the Emergency Floor. It is managed by the Acute Medical Team and consultants work there on a fortnightly rotational basis. There are daily consultant ward rounds. The length of stay since the move has resulted in a drop of the average length of stay from 8 to 2.5 days.
The addition of this new consultant post will enable us to further support the Ambulatory Unit in particular and provide a dedicated consultant telephone service for our local General Practitioner colleagues.
The James Paget University Hospital is part of the University of East Anglia Joint Medical School and undergraduate medical students spend 30% of their clinical teaching time within the Trust. There is therefore ample opportunity to become more involved with assessment and course development for anyone with an interest in this area.
Prospective candidates should be within 6 months of obtaining a CCT, or be listed on or eligible for the UK Specialist Register at the date of interview.
There is a wide choice of good local schools and competitive house prices in this beautiful area of the country. The historic city of Norwich is only 30 minutes away and has an international airport; there are excellent rail links to London and easy access to the ports of Felixstowe and Harwich for access to Europe.
