Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit has commenced and is due to be completed 2017, and plans to extend the neonatal unit are underway.

We provide high quality, friendly and effective community health services from multiple sites covering Walsall. Our multidisciplinary services include rapid response and homebased care, so that those with long term conditions and the frail elderly can remain in their own homes.

These are replacement posts to cover retirement and one vacancy. The post is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week plus 1 Additional PA available subject to negotiation.   The post is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week plus 1 Additional PA available subject to negotiation.  

The Gastroenterology team is cohesive and provides a vast array of services, beyond what would be expected of a District General Hospital. As expected, diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy, colonoscopy and ERCP services are established. We have regular GA lists and Endoscopic ultrasound, 24 hour oesophageal pH & manometry, wireless capsule endoscopy and fibroscan are all available. There is also a rapidly expanding clinical research program with several ongoing academic and commercial studies supported by dedicated research nurses, pharmacists and research coordinators.

The main duties of the post will include the provision of upper and lower Gastrointestinal Endoscopies (diagnostic and therapeutic); participation in the GI out of hours 1:6 on-call rota; a comprehensive Outpatient service for Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine; teaching and training of junior medical staff, medical students and physician associate students from Birmingham Medical School.

There are no general medical on call commitments and the successful candidate will be encouraged to develop a subspecialty interest to complement the interest of other colleagues.

If any prospective candidate wished to expand research activities, this would be fully supported.

The successful candidate must: possess the following relevant experience and training to undertake this post:-

  • Basic Medical Degree
  • Full MRCP or equivalent
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via:-

                      - CCT (Proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview)

          - European Community Rights or CESR

  • Evidence of Higher Specialist Training in Gastroenterology (or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of interview)
  • ALS (Adult Life Support) within last 3 years
