We are working with one of the leading NHS trust in Cheshire area to appoint two enthusiastic Consultants in Care of Older People to support the development of our orthogeriatric and frailty services.

The posts are replacement posts and attract 10 PA’s including 1PA for on call in General Medicine.

Salary: £76,761 - £103,490 Per Annum

The Trust has an integrated approach for acute medicine and care of older people without age-related policies and is committed to working with its partner organisations to deliver coordinated and joined up care for the older person.

The post holders will be expected to support service developments and drive changes in the management of patients in orthopaedics / frailty.

There will also be a pivotal role for the consultants to promote a community focused approach to care with the opportunity to develop areas of special interest e.g. falls, dementia support, assistive technology or self-management.

Care of Older People is an expanding department which is highly rated by patients and their relatives as well as junior doctors for providing excellent care, promoting a positive working environment and also as a teaching placement.

We strive to deliver the best care possible, adapting and developing services based on our elderly population needs.

We are currently in the process of recruiting an additional Specialty Doctor (1.0 WTE) with specific expertise and interest in the frail older population to help manage problems on or prior to admission and to help facilitate appropriate discharge.

If no SpR support (particularly on Friday afternoons) then clinic reduced (2 New and 4 FU Friday pm, 2 New 6 FU Tuesday am).

The Care of Older People consultants are supported by a trained secretary. Office space is provided within a shared office with the other department consultants and each consultant has a desk and PC with IT

Job Plan

The detailed job plan will be agreed for the individual integrating with existing capacity, acknowledging the need to focus on core service delivery. Other aspects of the programmed activities /supporting activities will be negotiated. Job plans will be reviewed at least annually, or more frequently, as and when the need arises.

On Call

for unselected medical emergencies attracts 1 PA. The On-Call availability supplement is category A. The appointee will participate in the General Internal Medicine on call rota shared between 11 GIM consultants. The pattern of on call is outlined as follows: - The hospital provides 12 hours consultant cover 7 days a week 08:00 to 20:00 hrs. Tuesday – Thursday this cover is provided by the Acute Medicine Consultants. Monday, Friday and the Weekend is provided by the on-call consultant on a 1:9 rota weekdays and 1:12 rota weekends. Overnight on call support is provided off site. Post take ward round takes place the following morning from 8 am to 12:00 hrs and weekly job plan commitments are cancelled to accommodate the post take ward round. Following the weekend on call – Monday is a day off. At weekends there are two Post-take ward rounds at 8 am and 6 pm The average daily take is around 25 patients / day. The on call 9 – 17 hrs is provided by our Acute Medicine Consultants.



  • Applicants must have full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist register via
  • CCT in General Medicine and Geriatric Medicine (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview)
  • CESR
  • European Community Rights

Qualification and training

  • MB BS or equivalent
  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent

Clinical Knowledge & Expertise

  • Wide experience in all aspects of Care of Older People including orthogeriatrics / Fraility
  • Evidence of continuing personal and professional development and up to date with medical advances.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the core legal, ethical and political issues which govern medical practice
  • Experience of recent and current research/relevant publications.
  • Experience of teaching/training
