We are looking for an energetic, dynamic, enthusiastic consultant colleague to join the department and help in delivering the best renal care to its patients. The post provides a good balance of general nephrology, glomerulonephritis/vasculitis, procedures such as kidney biopsies and permcath insertions, inpatient care including satellite unit visits, haemodialysis work including involvement in home therapies (home haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis). Inpatient work would involve daily consultant ward rounds on the renal wards and outlying nephrology patients at MRI on a rotational basis with other consultant colleagues. There is a strong, consistent foundation doctor, core medical trainee and renal specialist trainee presence to support inpatient work. Being a large teaching hospital, this obviously comes with teaching responsibilities, both formalized sessions and bed-side teaching.
The haemodialysis component involves looking after a group of haemodialysis patients one of the satellite units. This is a heterogeneous group consisting both of stable haemodialysis patients but also some of the most complex and demanding patients requiring highly skilled haemodialysis input. The haemodialysis work is supported by an SAS doctor or an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. It is also anticipated that with future redistribution of consultant duties, alongside other consultants, the post holder will be involved in developing and shaping a robust glomerular diseases service. In the first instance however, the is a string need for a balanced clinical portfolio both to respond to current service demands and priorities but also a development of well-rounded consultants.
The outpatient clinics included in the current job plan are based at Withington Hospital, a 10 minute drive from the central hospitals campus and Tameside Hospital, a 35 minute drive away. The post holder will also provide an outreach nephrology service to this DGH, dialysis clinics in the local satellite dialysis and supervise dialysis care assisted by an advanced nurse practitioner.
