The role

We are seeking to appoint a Consultant Bariatric, Upper GI and minimally invasive Surgeon at The Shrewsbury & Telford Hospital NHS Trust. This is a replacement post.  The appointment will join 2 existing Bariatric/Upper GI Surgeons  and attracts 10 Programmed Activities per week (but there is scope for negotiating other PA work) on average to be carried out on SATH sites and 1 PA for on-call commitment giving a total of 11 PA’s.

Applications are welcome from those unable to work full-time for personal reasons.

We are a busy Upper GI and Bariatric service and this appointment will help us to maintain a high quality standard of service and improve and maintain national 18 week RTT standards. The unit is a designated Bariatric unit and this post will further enhance this service.

Candidates for this role must have GMC registration and recent experience within the NHS.

The Department

You will join two Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons in providing a full range of Bariatric, Upper Gastrointestinal and General Surgical services to Shropshire and Mid Wales.

The Bariatric service is supported by a Consultant in metabolic medicine, two Associate Specialists, Bariatric specialist nurse and dedicated Dietitians. The Department performs over 170 major Bariatric procedures a year from a wide area. Our local CCG (Telford and Wrekin) has the highest Bariatric referral rate in the Country.  In addition you will provide a full range of benign Upper-GI elective procedures.

The on call requirement will include a 1 in 11 General Surgical commitment at RSH and 1 in 11 workday surgical cover at PRH, which is shared with 8 colorectal colleagues. The Department is well supported by trainees providing opportunities for teaching in a friendly supportive environment.  It is essential that you are proficient in Bariatric procedures as well as the usual branches of both General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery applicable to work in a busy District General Hospital setting.

Our Hospitals

Our Hospitals are located in Shrewsbury and Telford and are brimming with exemplary teams of hardworking individuals.

It is a particularly exciting time to join the Trust as we have recently started working collaboratively with the Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle. We are one of only 5 UK hospitals to receive this support, from what is regarded as the safest hospital in the world. This collaboration means employees can benefit from the KPO (Kaizen Promotion Office) and value Stream work, gaining valuable help and guidance regardless of your level of expertise. It poses a unique opportunity to make a difference and we hope you will want to be a part of our journey. More about this can be found under further links.

Shropshire is a beautiful county located between the West Midlands and North Wales. Whilst rural and home to the Shropshire Hills it is anything but sleepy. The county is bustling with idyllic towns including Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Bridgnorth and Ludlow, with plenty to do regardless of your interests. More information can again be found under further links.

We are ideally located between the north and the south making travelling around the UK extremely easy. As well as being only a short distance from major cities and busy transport links including Birmingham airport, our county also borders with beautiful north Wales which is abundant in outdoor activities, brilliant beaches, and thrilling scenery.

We look forward to hearing from you.
