Most services are provided at Queen Alexandra Hospital but we also offer a range of outpatient and diagnostic facilities closer to patients’ homes. We handle around 142,000 Emergency Department admissions a year and have the busiest maternity department on the South Coast. This is an exciting opportunity for either newly-qualified or established respiratory consultants to join our busy and visionary department. We are a dynamic team of fourteen consultants and would welcome colleagues who bring any sub-specialty skills, especially in COPD or Lung Cancer. This post will include dedicated time for research in airways disease. We can offer sub-specialty training in any of our established services, suitable for the individual and the needs of our department. Most-importantly, we seek highly-motivated colleagues.

Our Trust is one of the largest and busiest in the UK, with a catchment of around 600,000. We have a ten-bedded respiratory HDU, equipped to level-3 specification. Our department provides subspecialty services in our new-build Respiratory Centre for ILD, sleep, COPD, lung cancer, pleural disease, TB, NIV, bronchiectasis and difficult asthma. We are supported by 16 specialist nurses, 4 physiologists and 2 senior respiratory physiotherapists. We have seven respiratory SpRs.

We have a newly appointed multidisciplinary COPD Specialist team with role of delivering COPD Best Practice Care to our annual 1200 acute COPD admissions.

We have a specialist COPD clinic with access to a regional Lung Volume Reduction MDT.

The department is active in COPD research and innovation with recent work including validation of the myCOPD App and MISSION MDT community clinics.

We are one of the 2 lead centres in the Wessex Asthma Network on course to be specially commissioned. A clinical psychologist, dietician, ENT consultant, physiotherapist, 5 research nurses, 4 clinical fellows, 4 clinical scientists and a clinical trials assistant support the service. We provide sputum and BAL inflammometry, bronchial thermoplasty, nasendoscopy, anti-IgE therapy and airway-acidification tests.

We treat around 400 new cancer patients per year in close collaboration with 4 dedicated oncologists. We perform a wide range of in-house investigations, including CPET, EBUS, EUS, CT/PET and medical thoracoscopy. The pleural practice is extensive, augmented by our 2 ultrasound machines, and includes indwelling pleural catheter and ambulatory services. We have 3 Lung CNS and 1 full time Mesothelioma CNS.

The ILD service cares for over 600 patients, supported by a specialist nurse, and is licensed to prescribe pirfenidone. We hold a regular teleconference with a national referral centre.

The sleep service supports 1 PSG beds and caters for a wide range of respiratory and non-respiratory sleep disorders; it overlaps our large domiciliary NIV practice.

The TB team provides case-management, screening and prophylaxis, including community outreach and extensive advice to other healthcare professionals.

Our bronchiectasis service has over 350 complex patients under active follow-up. We deliver our own outpatient IV antibiotic and replacement IV immunoglobulin services.

Our Trust has three dedicated thoracic radiologists and extensive interventional support.

The department has a dedicated procedures suite and day ward which delivers medical thoracoscopy, intrapleural catheters, bronchoscopy, EBUS and bronchial thermoplasty.

Our research program is led by an academic chair; research participation extends to ILD, bronchiectasis, asthma, COPD, health services and pleural disease.The research and innovation program is also supported by the Wessex CRN and AHSN. We are the lead centre for several multi-centre trials with research funding obtained from the MRC, NIHR, SBRI and Asthma UK.
