Global public health is a high priority for PHE and the Field Epidemiology Service is seeking to appoint a Consultant Epidemiologist from either a scientific or medical background to support the co-ordination of PHE’s National Infection Service Global Health activities, including the International Health Regulation strengthening project. Funding for this post is initially available until March 2019 with an option to extend until March 2021 and
applicants are welcomed for either fixed term or secondment opportunities.

The Consultant Epidemiologist will be skilled in the application of epidemiological methods to health protection issues, including the design, conduct and analysis of outbreak and incident investigations. They will be able to lead investigation teams and provide expert epidemiological advice in outbreaks and incidents. They will work independently and under pressure against short deadlines when required.

The successful candidate will be competent to develop, direct and  collaborate on research projects and programmes in health protection. They will also have strong leadership skills, experience of teaching and supervising students and trainees in intervention and surveillance epidemiology.

The candidate must be included on the GMC Specialist Register or UK Public Health Register and must meet minimum CPD requirements in accordance with the requirements of the Faculty of Public Health/Royal College of Pathologists/Royal College of Physicians or other recognised body.

The successful candidate will be appointed to the Consultant salary scale appropriate to their years of seniority or if from a background other than medicine to NHS Agenda for Change Band 8d. (This post is not suitable for candidates who wish to work flexibly or job share)

Appointment to this post is on PHE terms and conditions of service. Only previous continuous service in the Civil Service is recognised for contractual purposes. If appointed to this post on the terms related to the Clinical Ring Fence, previous continuous service in the NHS and Civil Service is recognised for contractual purposes.
