Do you thrive on the excitement of practicing high quality Emergency Medicine?

Do you want to work in a high-achieving, large, and friendly Emergency Department?

Maybe you are not sure and want to find out?

If your answer is “Yes!” to any of these questions, then we want to talk to you!

  • We are actively recruiting high quality, motivated doctors capable of working at consultant level in Emergency Medicine at Northampton General Hospital.
  • You may be wondering whether Northampton Emergency Department is a good place to work so here are some facts to assure you that it is:
  • The Emergency Department was inspected in the depths of Winter 2017 by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and was rated as “GOOD” overall. We would really like you to read the report as it describes a great deal of the fantastic work that we do (it is available at NGH Urgent Care CQC Report 2017).
  • Within the CQC report, we are rated as being “OUTSTANDING” for Leadership in Urgent and Emergency care. Being appointed to this post will make you a part of that team.
  • Our facilities and systems for providing care to older patients were also rated as “OUTSTANDING”, with a special mention in the CQC’s ‘State of Care’ report 2017.
  • In a recent Patient Safety Survey (PASCAL), 95% of our staff said that they like their job and are proud to work here. This was the best result in the East Midlands out of all 8 Trusts surveyed!
  • Northampton General Hospital is striving to be the first UK hospital to achieve Pathway to Excellence™ accreditation for “recognition of excellence, and a safe positive working environment”. This means that there is investment from the Executive Team in ensuring that we can all provide the best, possible care that we can, despite any of the pressures currently being experienced in the NHS.
  • We are a Teaching Hospital with close links to Universitiy of Leicester and Northampton University so if you enjoy teaching and want to get involved, there are plenty of opportunities!
  • We invest in our doctors. Want to do a relevant course? No problem. Want to get involved in Quality Improvement? Join the trust’s successful QI team.
  • Not only do we invest in our doctors, we also all believe in helping them realise their full potential so you will be actively encouraged to develop your clinical and managerial knowledge and skills. Many of our doctors successfully apply for recognized training posts in all sorts of different specialties, after working with us. If that isn’t how you want to take your career but you still want to be a Consultant, we also offer a CESR route for GMC accreditation in Emergency Medicine.

A bit more about our department and the team…

We are a very organised and professional department seeing upwards of 115,000 patients per year, of which approximately 25% are children. The Consultant team is currently made up of 7 FRCEM qualified Consultants and we all have specialist interests including Emergency Ultrasound, Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine and Geriatric Emergency Medicine. We are an accredited Trauma Unit of the Central England Trauma Network and we have on-site tertiary Vascular Surgery, Stroke and Oncology services as well as a busy interventional Cardiology Unit.

The Trust values and invests in the Emergency Department and Urgent Care. The Emergency Department Resuscitation Room has recently been refurbished and a new First Intervention Team Assessment Area built. We are also expanding our services by building a co-located Primary Care facility next to the Emergency Department, into which we will move our Primary Care Streaming team. Even more exciting is the bespoke, multi-million pound 60-bedded Acute Assessment and Admissions Unit for Urgent Care that is currently being built opposite the Emergency Department. This is a really exciting time to be joining us!

Living in Northampton…

Northampton is a rapidly growing County town. It has a fascinating blend of rich heritage, distinguished history and all the energy and vigor you would expect of one of the fastest growing, modern, commercial towns in the UK. The county is part of a designated government growth area, which will see significant development and consequent population growth over the next 25 years. The population of the town is predicted to increase by more than 50,000 people by 2021 so we will always be kept busy!

If you like sports, Northampton has successful Rugby Union and County Cricket Teams for you to go and watch, as well as a slightly less successful Football team. For theatre and film aficionados, considerable investment is being made into a new shopping park just outside of Northampton, housing the county’s only iMax cinema, and there is an “arts” cinema situated in the town centre, which is associated with the renowned Royal and Derngate Theatre.

If you have children, local schools are good and the hospital has crèche facilities.

If all that still isn’t enough for you, Northampton is an hour’s journey by train or road from London and our house prices are also considerably cheaper!

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. For further information please visit the UK Visas and Immigration website.

From 6 April 2017, Tier 2 skilled worker applicants, applying for entry clearance into the UK, must present a criminal record certificate from each country they have resided continuously or cumulatively for 12 months or more in the past 10 years.
