Consultant in Geriatrician with an Interest in Frailty Medicine
Medical Division, Department of Health and Social Care

An opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Geriatrician with an interest in Frailty Medicine to join the Medical team within the Isle of Man Government’s Department of Health & Social Care. This is a new post which will lead the development of a community and orthogeriatric service for the island. 

We are seeking to appoint a full time (10 Programmed Activities) substantive consultant in geriatrics and frailty medicine. This is a new post which will lead the development of a community and orthogeriatric service for the island, as well as provide high quality and responsive medical cover for Martin Ward, which is a Care of the Elderly Ward located at Ramsey & District Hospital. 

The job provides an excellent and unique opportunity to work between the acute and community setting helping the GPs and community services to avoid emergency admissions and facilitate early discharge of acutely admitted frail patients through support in both the community and the hospital.

Main duties of the role will include:

  • Develop and lead Frailty service with particular emphasis on community geriatrics and rehabilitation/orthogeriatric care
  • Work in collaboration with the existing Geriatrician dealing with Stroke and Parkinson’s service
  • Education and training of junior doctors, medical students, and multidisciplinary members of the acute medical team
  • Takes part in the on call medical rota and willing to swap on calls for colleagues planned or unexpected absences and deliver a high quality acute medical care
  • Working at both Ramsey & District Hospital and Nobles Hospital

About our Hospitals 

Ramsey & District Hospital is located in Ramsey, in the north of the Isle of Man. It offers a comprehensive range of community services, including outpatient clinics, rehabilitation facilities, wound and podiatry services, community dentistry and a Minor Injuries Unit, which is nurse led. The inpatient ward, called Martin Ward, is a 31-bedded ward comprising a mixture of respite care, rehabilitation and step down patients from the acute hospital. There is a dedicated team of nursing and AHP staff covering Martin Ward and the rest of the hospital.

Noble’s Hospital is a District General Hospital opened in 2003, situated on the outskirts of Douglas, the capital of the Isle of Man, and equipped to the very latest standards. There is a total complement of 290 beds including a well-appointed Private Patient Unit. There is a cottage hospital, in Ramsey in the north of the Island, where some Consultant clinical sessions are held. A Combined Education and Training Centre are situated in the grounds of Noble’s Hospital. There is a library with a qualified medical librarian and secretarial staff. Frequent clinical meetings are held throughout the year covering a wide variety of subjects.

The unique location, geography and constitution of the Isle of Man means that the Department provides a much wider range of services than would be expected in a comparative health authority or Social Services in the United Kingdom.
