Consultant Gastroenterology and General Medicine
Medical Division, Department of Health and Social Care

An opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Gastroenterology to join the Medical team within the Isle of Man Government’s Department of Health & Social Care. The post is based at Noble’s Hospital which is a modern, bright hospital serving the acute healthcare needs of the Isle of Man. 

The busy Gastroenterology team at Nobles Hospital currently see 2,500 outpatients annually and the inpatient team currently looks after 10 general medical and gastroenterology inpatient beds. The successful candidate will join the team as a second gastroenterologist. The post covers general gastroenterology including luminal, functional disorders, hepatology, pancreatobiliary and nutrition. 

We are seeking to appoint a full time (10 Programmed Activities) Gastroenterologist. This is a new post designed to meet the increasing demand for specialist gastroenterology services within our island. The successful candidate will participate in a 1:8 consultant rota.

The successful candidate will lead and support Gastroenterology services on the island in partnership and with support from the existing post holder while supporting the medical and surgical divisions in delivery of gastroenterology services on the island. The candidate should be able to support General Internal Medicine (GIM) and share the workload with other specialty colleagues in the division in terms of GIM on calls, inpatient and outpatient responsibilities.

The post holder is expected to develop strong and effective partnership with surgical gastroenterologists in the hospital and their colleagues in regional tertiary referral centres to make sure the patients receive seamless care. The successful candidate is expected to show enthusiasm and skill in teaching, training and quality improvement activities and support junior medical and nursing staff as well as GPs on the island. 

About the Hospital

Noble’s Hospital is a District General Hospital opened in 2003, situated on the outskirts of Douglas, the capital of the Isle of Man, and equipped to the very latest standards. There is a total complement of 290 beds including a well-appointed Private Patient Unit. There is a cottage hospital, in Ramsey in the north of the Island, where some Consultant clinical sessions are held. A Combined Education and Training Centre are situated in the grounds of Noble’s Hospital. There is a library with a qualified medical librarian and secretarial staff. Frequent clinical meetings are held throughout the year covering a wide variety of subjects.

The unique location, geography and constitution of the Isle of Man means that the Department provides a much wider range of services than would be expected in a comparative health authority or Social Services in the United Kingdom.
