Consultant - General Adult Psychiatry
Dudley and Walsall Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust is situated on the western edge of the West Midland. Walsall is a thriving metropolitan town, bounded by Wolverhampton, South Staffordshire, North Birmingham and Sandwell and covers 40 square miles to the North of Birmingham. It is well served by motorway and rail links, connecting to other centres and countryside to the North. While much of the borough is urban in nature, it includes large areas of green belt. There are some excellent schools, shopping facilities and entertainment.
The total population of Walsall is 253,500. In 1991 almost 15% of the total population was from minority ethnic groups, mostly from South Asia. There are areas of socio-economic deprivation and some neighbourhoods of relative affluence.
Birmingham is easily accessible to both areas and has a rich culture and social amenities. The University has a prestigious medical school which places medical students at both localities.
ADULT MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES
Whilst there are separate teams providing the Early Access Service (EAS) and the Community Recovery Service (CRS), the general adult psychiatrists have retained a role which covers the EAS; CRS and inpatient care. They provide one day a week in the EAS and the rest of the time is divided between providing care in the community, CRS facilities and inpatient facilities.
This gives continuity of care and provides a better service for service users. Inpatient facility for General Adult patient in Walsall locality is at Dorothy Pattison Hospital and consists of 42 beds.
