A Keele University Teaching Trust
Our service users are looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist who can make a real positive difference during their pregnancy and early stages of motherhood.
You will be a valued senior member of our team, providing specialist mental health services to pregnant and postnatal women with the support of a highly experienced MDT that includes a Nurse Consultant. This is a full time post with the Perinatal Service, based on the Brockington Mother and Baby Unit, St George's Hospital, Stafford. You will be responsible for providing
psychiatric services to women in the local area and on the Unit, with ultimate responsibility for all admitted patients.
Here's one story of how the Brockington Mother and Baby Unit has helped a mother bond with her baby girl:
" I found out I was pregnant and was really excited but anxious at the same time. At 11 weeks pregnant I slipped over and had to go for a scan. This is when I feel things began to go downhill and I started to feel low. They told me there was something wrong and having to decide whether or not to keep the baby was an enormous strain. They couldn't tell me any more
until the 20 week scan.
I had the most agonising 9 weeks wondering what I should do. At 20 weeks things looked a little more positive but they still couldn't be 100% sure. I decided I was going to have this baby.
After all the worry and upset my baby girl was just perfect. I thought things could only get better - but I was wrong.
Four weeks after my baby was born I hit rock bottom, I became so anxious and low in mood that I was admitted to hospital.
During my stay in hospital it was mentioned that I would be admitted to a Mother and Baby Unit. I was very reluctant to go but I was told I needed to bond with my baby.
On the morning of being transferred to the Brockington Mother and Baby Unit I felt like I couldn't go on. I cried, was sick, shaking, frightened, anxious
and I paced up and down the hospital corridors not having a clue what to do with myself.
Since my time on Brockington Ward, I know I have come a long way - from not wanting to bond with my baby to now seeing her smile when I hold her tight, knowing that she knows I'm her mum. This is down to all the staff on Brockington who have me no matter what, especially during despair when I've cried, or even whatever I'm feeling the staff have right with me, every step."
