Whangarei is the largest hospital in Northland, providing secondary care services for the region, supported by three regional hospitals. We are seeking Surgical Registrars to join our team from December 2017.
There are seven surgeons providing a full range of elective and acute services to Northland. We cover the full range of General Surgery but also cover specialist interests in Colorectal (including laparoscopic), Upper GI surgery, Oncoplastic breast and endocrine surgery. We have a very high incidence of skin cancers including melanoma and local skin flaps are a common operation. We also provide support to the smaller peripheral hospitals in Dargaville, Bay of Islands and Kaitaia. There is also an opportunity for audit and research.
We have excellent support from a growing radiology department that boasts the fastest CT scanner in the Southern Hemisphere and are developing our acute services around this! A modern theatre complex and ICU to allow us to deliver an excellent service across a wide range of surgery to allow you to grow your skills as a young surgeon, while having the support from a friendly surgical team from consultants to nursing and support staff.
We provide close supervision to trainees in acute and outpatient settings, allied with a commitment to teaching. There is an active clinical training programme with didactic sessions, interactive based teaching, journal club and videoconferencing.
Whangarei Hospital provides secondary care services to a large rural. region with many high health needs. Due to the population make up and the unselected nature of our admissions Registrars gain experience managing a wide variety of conditions including rarer conditions.
