Academic Training Opportunities in Medicine:
Call for applications for 2018 NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowships

The 2018 NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship (NIHR ACF) scheme is now open for applications (https://www.oriel.nhs.uk/Web/Vacancies).  Up to 250 NIHR ACFs are available in 2018 and will provide funding for doctors entering specialty training and for those already in specialty training who hold a National Training Number (NTN), and have outstanding potential as a researcher and/or educationalist.

Successful applicants will have 25% of their time protected so they can develop their academic skills and prepare and compete for a training fellowship for a higher degree or post doctorate fellowship if applicable. Funding will be available for a maximum of three years, or four years for General Practitioners (GPs). Successful applicants will have access to a structured research training programme and £1000 annual bursary to attend conferences.

Recruitment to all 2018 NIHR ACF posts, including General Practice and Cardiothoracic Surgery posts, will begin on 9 October 2017 ahead of the recruitment drive for standard specialty training.
Recruitment guidance and details of the posts available can be found on the NIHR website (http://nihr.ac.uk/acfs).

The application process is managed by Health Education England (HEE) local offices in partnership with higher education institutes who will base their decision on clinical competence and evidence of significant academic excellence and potential. Only applicants who can demonstrate outstanding potential for development as a clinical academic in research and / or education will be considered for these posts. HEE local offices will be able to advise on the level(s) and specialty(ies) of posts available and the application process.

Round 1 recruitment table for 2018 NIHR ACF posts will begin on 9 October 2017 and the closing date for applications is 6 November 2017. Short-listing and interviews will take place between 8 November 2017 and 22 December 2017, with initial offers being made from 8 January 2018 via the Oriel system. The hold deadline will be 15 January 2018.

Details of NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship opportunities available for 2018 and HEE local office contact information can be found on the NIHR website at (http://nihr.ac.uk/acfs).
