Consultants in Gastroenterology and General (Internal) Medicine
We are looking for two inspirational Consultant Gastroenterologists and General Medicine who will support and expand the quality services our Trust already offers. The successful candidates will complement the expertise of the seven other consultants in our large teaching trust, providing gastroenterology, hepatology and endoscopy to a culturally diverse population.
These posts are based at City Hospital, Birmingham and Sandwell General Hospital and cover the area local to Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust. Experience in general gastroenterology with a subspecialty interest is required to help further develop this already expanding service: IBD / nutrition and hepatology / viral hepatitis are two key subspecialties we are looking to develop further, but applicants with other sub-specialty interests would be encouraged to apply as we look to expand our team and further develop subspecialisation.
The Trust is one of the largest teaching Trusts in the United Kingdom with a reputation for excellent, friendly staff who provide high quality care from City Hospital in Birmingham and Sandwell General in West Bromwich. Both are busy acute hospitals providing many specialist services and a broad range of emergency services, including Accident & Emergency at both sites. The Trust has circa 900 beds and serves a population of over 500,000. The Trust is a key partner along with the local Clinical Commissioning Group, PCTs and local authorities in the “Right Care Right Here” programme which seeks to deliver an ambitious redevelopment of local health services. Following a very successful public consultation, implementation of the programme is underway with a wide range of secondary care services now being provided via new models of care in community locations. As part of this programme, in early 2019, we will open our eagerly awaited Midland Metropolitan Hospital, putting us firmly on the map as one of the nation’s leading provider of integrated care. It will bring all of our acute services onto one site, promoting better patient safety and patient experience.
Applicants must possess recognised training and broad experience in Gastroenterology and General (Internal) Medicine (and full registration with the GMC). Applicants must be on the GMC’s Specialist Register, or be within 6 months of achieving CCT in Gastroenterology and General (Internal) Medicine.
The Gastroenterology service at SWBH NHS Trust provides care for the population of West Birmingham and Sandwell and is supported by com-prehensive endoscopy, GI physiology, pathology and and imaging services. Bowel Cancer Screening and Bowel Scope Screening lists are carried out at both sites, and the department also runs an NHS Endo-barrier programme.
The successful appointees will also be expected to participate in the on-call rota for medicine and for endoscopy.
The Trust has a very good reputation for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching with strong links to the University of Birmingham and Health Education West Midlands. Most of the departmental members are actively involved in clinical trials and a research interest would be strongly supported for a suitably qualified applicant.
The area boasts affordable housing with popular residential districts such as Harborne and Sutton Coldfield an easy commute to either of the main hospital sites. There are a number of very good schools and colleges locally (including a number of independent and grammar schools such as the King Edwards Schools). Birmingham is a very green city with more than 8,000 acres of green space including impressive parks around the city. Due to our central location and good motorway connections we are in easy reach of a number of beautiful rural locations including the Peak District, Cannock Chase, the Lickey Hills and the Cotswolds. The Trust offers a competitive relocation package.
