Consultant in Anaesthetics
This is a replacement post for a Consultant in Anaesthetics.
It is expected you would have an interest in peri-operative care and in particular, management of post-operative patients within our Step Down Unit. The unit is a 16 bedded, monitored, post-operative care ward, managing patients requiring level 1 to 2 support and complex pain management for all surgical specialties. It is a high turnover unit with over 100 admissions per month.
You would join 10 Anaesthetic Consultants working regular sessions on the unit and be part of a rewarding multidisciplinary ward team. Initially this would be on a flexible basis, but will become fixed pending retirements. You would provide daytime consultant patient reviews, progressing complex patients early postoperative recovery. As part of your role you would provide support for a team of F1 and F2 pro-gramme doctors covering the unit. Out of hours, the unit is managed by the on call anaesthetic team.
The anaesthetic department is part of a large teaching hospital that delivers quality anaesthesia and critical care for secondary and tertiary surgical referrals. We are looking for a strong team player who will be able to build on the high quality service that has been developed in Derby. This post is a rare opportunity nationally, to become part of an established post-operative care unit, which is part of the hospital’s critical care capacity. An example of how this benefits our patients is that this allows for the critical care admission for all emergency laparotomies as per NELA recommendations. We would expect the successful applicant to bring something innovative to the Step Down unit and to develop it as part of the Royal College of Anaesthetists vision of how perioperative medicine can be delivered. The an-aesthetic department has a strong and supportive team ethos to enable the skills of the appointee to thrive and be inspired to develop the department further.
