Applications are invited for two new full time (10 PA) Consultant Rheumatologist posts based at Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Burton on Trent.

Applicants must be on the GMC’s specialist register for Rheumatology. Those, who for personal reasons, are only able to work less than 10.0 PAs (part time) or prefer a job share arrangement will be considered and are welcome to apply.

This is an exciting time to join Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (BHFT), with plans in place to collaborate clinically and administratively with the Derby Royal Teaching Hospital Trust. The Rheumatology service will be delivered from linked Twin Hubs. The Burton Hub will deliver specialist rheumatology services for a catchment population of about 400,000. The combined twin-hub including the Derby Trust will serve a population approximating one million.

The BHFT now includes community hospitals in Lichfield (Samuel Johnson Hospital) and Tamworth (Sir Robert Peel Hospital). This along with the Derby collaboration allows us to radically re-design the way we deliver care, without traditional organisational constraints but with opportunities to further develop our existing modern, patient focussed, and innovative service. The new posts are essential to this process of change.

The current rheumatology service includes general rheumatology, osteoporosis, and bone density scanning. Inflammatory arthritis and connective tissue diseases make up most of our workload. The planned changes will enable sub-specialisation while accommodating all recent major advances in rheumatology practice.

We are predominantly an out-patient based service, with clinics undertaken mainly at the Queen’s Hospital in Burton. Medical beds can be accessed when required. The Rheumatology department is the main user of and has priority access to the medical day case unit. There is no Rheumatology on-call commitment but the department undertakes regular ward consults and liaises closely with the acute medical service.

The Rheumatology department has an extensive and increasing research portfolio supported by 2 research nurses. Research interests include MDT practice, osteoporosis and therapeutics.

Rheumatology musculoskeletal ultrasound is available both in Radiology and Rheumatology. Applicants with prior musculoskeletal ultrasound training and experience will have the opportunity to lead this service development. Applicants with other interest areas are welcome to apply.

The present Rheumatology establishment consists of two full-time Consultant Rheumatologists (to be increased to 4) and two hospital specialist middle grades (to be increased to 4). We have 4 Specialist Nurses (to be increased to 8) providing expertise in general rheumatology, osteoporosis, biologic therapies and multi-system diseases. Our MDT also includes specialist, dedicated physiotherapists and OTs.

Burton Hospitals Trust has an excellent reputation for undergraduate teaching of students from Leicester, Birmingham and Keele medical schools. This development will allow new opportunities for collaboration with Derby Medical School.

Burton Hospitals Trust is a very friendly, welcoming work environment and hospital benefiting from excellent relationships between management and clinical staff facilitated by strong medical leadership and close links with the local commissioners.

We are situated in idyllic, semi-rural surroundings in the heart of central England, only minutes away from spectacular countryside in the Peak District National Park, Derbyshire Dales and Staffordshire Moorlands. Major population centres and medical schools are easily accessible in all directions in Derby, Stoke, Nottingham, Leicester and Birmingham. Schooling in our area, both state and private, is of a very high standard. One of the most prestigious private day/boarding schools in the country is located just 5 miles away in Repton village. Major motorways (M1 & M6) and airports (Birmingham & East Midlands) are accessible in minutes. Trains to London take less than 90 minutes.

Informal enquiries would be welcomed by Dr Mohamed Nisar (Lead Consultant Rheumatologist) and Dr Ram Laxminarayan (Consultant Rheumatologist) on 01283 511511 ext 4111, and Dr James Crampton (Divisional Medical Director) on ext 5474.
