A permanent, 0.8 of full time equivalent, position is available for a suitably qualified General Paediatrician to join the Women, Child and Youth Health Service at Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMDHB) from February 2018. This position is at Wairau Hospital in Blenheim - located at the top of the South Island.

Working at Wairau Hospital you will join a dynamic and dedicated team of experienced staff providing general paediatric and specialist care, for a population of about 45,000, including neonatal, general, ambulatory, developmental and community paediatrics. We have eight dedicated in-patient beds in a modern purpose built environment for children of all ages.

The child health team works closely with the maternity team who manage 500 deliveries per annum. Neonatal care for stabilisation of the sick newborn includes ventilatory support prior to retrieval. Local ongoing care for babies over 34 weeks gestation includes CPAP and high flow nasal cannula oxygen. We have close links with the community based Early Years Development Service and our paediatric outreach service visits children in their homes. Our busy paediatric outpatient department (with three clinic rooms) sits adjacent to our modern in-patient facilities. For very sick and exceedingly specialised and complex children, we have excellent ties to tertiary units in Wellington (NICU), Auckland and Christchurch.

Weekly teleconferences with the paediatric team at Nelson Hospital strengthen collaboration across the district for peer review and CPD. Teleconferences are also held with tertiary centers as and when required. Outreach clinics are established for Paediatric Surgery, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Cystic Fibrosis and linked with Paediatrics at Nelson Hospital for Genetics, Nephrology and Neurology. Neuro-behavioral services are shared with the Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) and regular meetings aid collaborative care of children with mental health problems.

The DHB and local community have embraced the Children's Teams initiative and enjoy effective relationships with local Safeguarding Teams of Oranga Tamariki (OT), police and midwifery carers. Gateway clinics assess health of children in care proceedings.

We are seeking a Paediatrician to join our team who is first and foremost a generalist with the experience, skills and energy to contribute to further developing the service to children and families. They will uses innovative and creative approaches to making a difference, and ideally have experience (or a strong interest in developing specialist expertise) in the areas of developmental and behavioural paediatrics or diabetes.

The successful candidate will stand out in terms of their ability, personality and skills to complement and extend the current district-wide team of nine Paediatricians, in order to enhance the scope and quality of service across the district. Certified Neonatal Life Support training is desirable and APLS essential. You will share in the afterhours on call roster of 1:3 on weekdays and 1:4 (Friday to Sunday).

We also welcome applications of suitably qualified candidates who prefer to work less than the advertised 0.8FTE (64 hours a fortnight).
