Why not come to South Australia and experience Emergency medicine in Central Adelaide whilst enjoying all the region has to offer? Some of Australia's best beaches, world famous wine regions, the Fringe festival, Tour Down Under, V8 motor racing, the fantastic Adelaide oval and much more. Adelaide was the only Australian city featured in the New York Time's "top places to go in 2015" and in 2016, was named one of the world’s most liveable cities for the 5th year running.
The RAH is South Australia's largest accredited teaching hospital. It is a major trauma centre treating up to 1400 trauma patients per year with 25% of these being classed as having serious injury. The ED sees in excess of 70,000 patients per year with a 42% admission rate. In 2017 we are moving to a new state-of-the-art facility, becoming Australia's most advanced hospital, and forming a critical part of the $3 billion South Australian Health and Biomedical Research Precinct, the largest health precinct in the southern hemisphere.
The QEH, 20 minutes west of the city, is a 307 bed acute care teaching hospital (ACEM accredited as urban district), which sees approximately 120 patients a day, with a varied case-mix including paediatrics and obstetrics. Earlier this year, it was announced by the SA government that the QEH would receive a $250 million upgrade that will include a new emergency department. In addition, the QEH will have a new operating theatre, day surgery suite, outpatient clinics, medical imaging services, and brain and spinal surgery rehabilitation services.
Emergency medical practitioners will work across our two campuses, ensuring that their training exposes them to a wide variety of emergency medicine experiences. With the opportunity to rotate through the trauma service as Trauma Registrar (ACEM special skills), and the option of external rotations to Anaesthesia, ICU, MedSTAR Retrieval Service and the Women's and Children's Hospital for Paediatric ED. CALHN can provide the complete provisional and advanced training package. We have strong links with other departments, such as hyperbaric medicine, for additional rotations should you have specific area of interest.
Within the network there is a structured teaching program. Trainees have access to protected weekly teaching time, and access to the simulation centre at Adelaide University. Our faculty consists of college examiners, FACEMS with regional ACEM educational positions, ALS, APLS, EMST, ETM and MIMMS instructors, as well as FACEMS with further qualification in Toxicology, ultrasound, prehospital and retrieval medicine This places us in a great position to provide comprehensive education to our trainees. Both hospitals offer positions for Registrars and Resident Medical Officers with a keen interest in Emergency Medicine. Residents with emergency medicine experience may have the opportunity to rotate for 3 months to the Trauma Service at the RAH and we can offer training in the ACEM Emergency Medicine certificate and diploma to selected applicants.
The South Australian public sector promotes diversity and flexible ways of working including part-time. Applicants are encouraged to discuss the flexible working arrangements for this role. Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory Criminal History Check. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants are encouraged to apply.
