The National Infection Service (NIS)

Public Health England (PHE) is one of the largest public health agencies in the world, delivering a wide range of public health functions with over 5,000 staff. Following a strategic review of PHE, the National Infection Service (NIS) was established in 2015, with the aim of ensuring that England remains at the leading edge of public health science. Bringing together existing teams of approximately 2,500 scientific, medical, administrative and managerial colleagues to reduce the burden of infectious disease and improve public health.

The NIS is the largest directorate in PHE and is being reorganised to strengthen multidisciplinary and scientific leadership. Our development programme has commenced and our reorganisation will occur in 2018, building on decades of world-class expertise to develop new organisational arrangements that are fit for the future and transferring these to a new PHE national centre at Harlow in 2021-2024.

NIS is recruiting to eleven leadership posts for our new management team.

We are looking for:

A Deputy Director to provide the scientific leadership for laboratories across the NIS which are being brought together as part of our reorganisation. NIS Laboratories supports the topic-specific departments and the NIS Research & Development Institute by providing safe, effective, efficient and innovative laboratory services to them. It is a critical role which supports the delivery of the primary PHE function to protect the public health.

In the first instance, as part of the NIS development programme, the post holder will lead, with the Deputy Director NIS Laboratory Operations, a reorganisation bringing together all current NIS laboratory activity, ensuring; the effective and efficient delivery of laboratory services, to the highest scientific standards, across NIS, and offering robust career development of laboratory scientists in topic specific areas.

This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in realising our ambitions to ensure the NIS is at the forefront of scientific research and innovation and to remain world leaders in this field. The post holder will require capability to work in three settings: NHS diagnostic services, reference diagnostics, research microbiology, and across bacteriological, virological and serological testing. With significant senior level experience and scientific expertise in this field and a proven ability, you will develop and lead a highly engaged, high performing department to realise these ambitions.

Working in partnership with the NIS Laboratories Operations Deputy Director from a shared office either in North London or Wiltshire, you will be supported by General Managers who will assist in the day to day management of the service, enabling you to focus on scientific leadership.
