South East Spinal Surgery, a part of Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals (BSUH) NHS Trust, is to appoint 2 Consultant Spinal Surgeons of Orthopaedic or Neurosurgical background.  Appropriate Fellowship training in Spinal Surgery is required, further details of which can be found in the Person Specification.

The posts have approval from the Royal College of Surgeons, and serve as replacement posts to ensure a full complement of 7 ‘Complex Spine’ surgeons.

The Unit is a complex spine centre offering the full spectrum of complex spinal surgery apart from paediatric deformity at this stage. We deliver elective and emergency spinal care to patients in Brighton and much of the South East of England.  There is certainly an opportunity for the appointees to develop sub-specialist interests.

BSUH itself is a Major Trauma Centre affiliated with Brighton and Sussex Medical School.

The appointees will be expected to be part of the Complex Spine fixation on-call rota and will have no commitment to the Orthopaedic / Neurosurgical on-call.

BSUH provides emergent care for Spinal Trauma at the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) in Brighton, moments from the seafront. Elective Spinal activity is undertaken at the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH), Haywards Heath, where a theatre is dedicated to Spinal surgery daily. 2020 sees the opening of a brand new development at the RSCH in Brighton, with expanded capacity.

We would encourage and welcome prospective candidates to visit the Unit.
In the interest of equal opportunities, we want to make sure that in-formation about candidates is provided in the same format so all applicants should fill in the standard application form on the NHS Jobs website and attach their cv.
Please be aware that candidates will be informed by email of the outcome of their application
